That's it... time to send Adam to Norfolk

I think COLORING is the right term. How is Adam Jones different from Matt Weiters and Nolan Riemold? I was only a kid when Eddie Murray left town, but I seem to recall that part of the reason he was unhappy here was that fans seemed to have the same problem with him that I sense they have with Adam Jones.

Though I wish he would stop making bad swings.

What on earth is coloring? I really hope you're not accusing this board of what I think you're accusing us of.

I am accusing no one in particular, and I am certainly not accusing the collective board. But, yes. I do think that race plays into the equation and that given the choice between having a white superstar vs a black superstar the consensus among O's fans would be a preference for fairer skin.

Trash me if you want, but Baltimore is a town with a race problem and a lot of racial tension.

I want all O's players to be superstars, regardless of skin color. My guess is that 95 percent of the board or more would agree.

It's possible that some are more quick to come down on a black or Hispanic player than a white player who has been equally bad. It does seem that Wieters has fewer detractors on the board than Jones, for instance. On the other hand, nobody has gotten more heat on this board (with good reason) than Garrett Atkins.

This is complete BS.

Reimold already got sent down. Nobody is happy with the production we are getting from Reimold, Wieters, or Jones and a few others for that matter.

The fans freaking love Adam Jones. Take your race card elsewhere.

Well. Garret Atkins sucks.

Nolan Riemold sucked even harder and is still sucking at Norfolk, yet people on this board still want him back on the big league squad ASAP.

Not until he starts hitting well down there.

My recollection is that Eddie was fired in Cleveland because the entire team got off to an absolutely terrible start at the plate one year...and they started to hit once he left town. He's not the guy I would want to hire.

I've been one of Eddie Murray's biggest fans straight back to 1977, but I also try to be objective.

He's been fired twice from hitting coach positions mid-season, and the numbers are interesting, though I'd caution against jumping to quick, simplistic conclusions.

2005 Indians - 3.94 rpg with Murray (53 games) & 5.33 rpg post-Murray (109 games)

2007 Dodgers - 4.36 rpg with Murray (66 games) & 4.66 rpg post-Murray (96 games)

He also served as hitting coach for four full seasons: 2002-04 with Cleveland & 2006 with LA

I did not say that the team was racist... Just that people seem to have a harder time with Jones' ego or "inability to take direction" than they do with Riemold or Wieters.

Look at the type of criticism each of these players is getting.

No one seems to be saying that Nolan or Matty are uncoachable, yet somehow Adam Jones can't comprehend instruction.

Why is it that results matter with Eddie but not for Crow?(BH, not neccassarily talking about you here..not sure what your Crow stance is..this is more of a general question)

Some people accuse him of that but not many. And there are far more posters here who defend Jones when people make ignorant comments about him being lazy or that his ego is a problem.

Seriously Dude....Snap back to reality.

The Orioles woes have nothing to with Race.

Trembley's neck is on the line, Crowley has been heavily criticized. I think 100% of baseball fans here would take a superstar player regardless of skin color. People here loved Murray until they thought he was being lazy. People here loved both Robinson's, Palmero, etc etc etc.

Jones has been criticized here because he has been performing poorly, swinging at a lot of balls, poor base running, & playing too shallow. They would be critical of any other guy that has those same flaws. There's no place here for the Race card. Its a totally unfounded claim.

Because everybody's racist obviously.

I'm half-kidding. Just trying to lighten to mood on a Friday.

Racism remains a factor in 2010, and Baltimore's history on such things is not a proud one. Satchel Paige and Jackie Robinson were subjected to brutal treatment in Charm City prior to their MLB debuts, and Frank Robinson got treated like trash at times in his Triple Crown year. Some of our parents, grandparents, etc. --or at least their contemporaries-- passed along their ignorant views...so it's a factor, though not so much in the Crowley/Murray question.

I'm a firm Terry Crowley supporter FWIW. Went to his Baseball School as an 11 & 12-y.o. and respect him as "The King of Swing" and an asset to the Orioles past, present & future.

This is Neg Rep worthy. The whole F'in board wants Atkins cut and your citing him as evidence of fan racial bias. Actually, I think its worthy of being banned. Any fans wanting Reimold back ASAP are few and far between. Fact is Jones has shown signs of being a similar player to CPat and that is major cause for concern. Nice try troll.

Again. I did not say that it is the majority of Hangouters that have a problem. But I am saying that I have never heard ANYONE here suggest that Nolan or Weiters are lazy or have ego problems. Only Jones.

You're right about color on thso statement.... However the color is GREEN. They are ready to cut ties with him because they are afraid to admit they made a mistake & cut their losses.

    • Awesome research, thanks. I was a fan in 1974 but had forgotten that string of five shutouts.  This last two weeks of rotation excellence (and your list) is giving me flashbacks to the summer of love (1967), when I started to make game logs to savor the strings of shutouts and low-hit gems by Oriole starters. Looking back now at the game logs kept by Baseball-Reference (manually, without your sorting skills!), it's hard to identify exactly which streak so impressed my teenage fan-meter, or even which year. Certainly 1968 was all about low scoring league-wide.  Maybe it was the stretch 22-27 May 1967 featuring Phoebus, Bertaina, Barber, McNally, and Phoebus again (good old 4-man rotation!), including three scoreless outings. Or Hardin and Brabender joining Phoebus, McNally and Palmer from 15 to 20 September, 1967. What about 1969, with Cuellar, Lopez and Leonhard joining the previous cast of McNally, Phoebus, and Hardin, twirling 10 starts (13-22 June) while allowing only 12 runs.  Anyway, it feels rather historic to see this run of high-end pitching from an Orioles rotation. Here's a chart to recap the numbers on this streak in progress... Date Starter IP H ER ERA (14 G) totals: 81.67 59 19 2.09 21-Apr Irvin 6.2 4 0   22-Apr Suarez 5.2 4 0   23-Apr Rodriguez 4.1 11 7   24-Apr Kremer 5.1 3 2   26-Apr Burnes 6 3 1   27-Apr Irvin 7 4 0   28-Apr Suarez 4 7 4   29-Apr Rodriguez 5.2 5 0   30-Apr Kremer 7 4 2   1-May Burnes 6 4 2   2-May Bradish 4.2 4 1   3-May Irvin 6.1 2 0   4-May Means 7 3 0   5-May Kremer 6 1 0
    • Somehow feels typical of Orioles to play up to the competition, and get burned by the pretenders... same with individual starting pitchers.
    • It was very obvious ...he would also take a look at his hand frequently. On Saturday, watching a clip in the dugout after one of the HR's, Kremer went to give a high five, pulled back and took a look at his hand. I thought it strange, and I thought something was off. He always appeared to be one of the more enthusiastic celebrators. It would seem the coaches would notice and probably did, but thought nothing of it. Certainly didn't affect his game.
    • Umpire really tried to screw us on Saturday.
    • I heard someone call it The Great American Smallpark.
    • I just looked thru their record a while ago.  Series against the Nats (2), White Sox, Marlins, Cardinals, Rockies and Angels makes their record of 1 win better than the O's way less impressive.  Their schedule coming up must be hell.
