1st year numbers in the league...

... looks like the stud muffin was not so great, if Matusz is not so great.

Funny how this comparison was ignored. ;)

Vida Blue?

Thanks for your permission to keep making fun of you. Not that I (or anyone else) really needed it.

Please don't construe this as in any way supporting anything the old guy says, but Vida Blue was better than some HOF pitchers. And if he'd been a little less fond of the nose candy he probably would be in the HOF today.

I had a Vida Blue baseball glove when I was a kid. Still have it, actually. Had to save up my allowance to get it after some punk kid stole my Bruce Sutter model.

Seriously... Price shut down our "B" lineup last night. Matusz shut down their A+++ lineup Monday night. Who pitched better?

Nick Markakis: You are wonderful.

David Price: Thank you; I've worked hard to become so.

Nick Markakis: I admit it, you are better than I am.

David Price: Then why are you smiling?

Nick Markakis: Because I know something you don't know.

David Price: And what is that?

Nick Markakis: I... am not left-handed.

[Moves himself to the right-hand batter's box and gains an advantage]

David Price: You are amazing.

Nick Markakis: I ought to be, after 5 years.

David Price: Oh, there's something I ought to tell you.

Nick Markakis: Tell me.

David Price: I'm not left-handed either.

No, I know Vida Blue was a good pitcher. I just looked up his strikeout totals...one year with 300+ strikeouts and then his next season high was 189.

Of course this is assuming that the O5F is using strikeouts as his barometer to measure dominance. If that's the case, Randy Johnson is my pick, followed by Nolan Ryan.

Make fun all you want, but in all seriousness have you ever heard Jim Palmer (no less) rave about any major league pitcher the way he was talking up Price last night? I know I sure haven't. Same with Dempsey. I mean the one quote Palmer even started out with "No disrespect to Brian Matusz but Price has the kind of arm you spend that kind of money on" (I forget how many millions he stated).

Anyway, this kid made the best Orioles hitters like Markakis and Jones look really bad flailing away and strikeing out on pitches that weren't even close to being strikes. His stuff is so dominant it reminds me of Vida Blue in his prime (I know many of you won't recall watching him but some of you do like Frobby).

At any rate, it is beyond clear that the Orioles have nobody on their major league roster, minor league pipeline, or even a potential number three draft pick that comes close to the talent and dominance of someone like Price or Strasburg. They are both on completely different planes when it comes to talent.

Dempsey said the same thing in his post game comments (paraphrasing) that what separates the Rays from the Orioles is exceptional players and talent like Longoria and Price who the Orioles simply have nobody of that quality on their roster nor in their organization.

Price = Blue -Maybe

Blue > Koufax - I seriously doubt it!!

And I've seen all pitch and its not even close!!! Price is good but just because he dominates Oriole hitters doesn't make him the greatest. He couldn't even hold Koufax's jock strap!!!

How would Price do if he could try to hold Koufax' jock strap on a mound 45" tall, throwing to a knees-to-shoulders strike zone, in 85 park factor Dodger Stadium, in a non-DH league that averaged about 3.0 runs/team/game?

I once watched Blue and Palmer duelling in a game like the two aces they were in old Memorial stadium. Blue was every bit the match for Palmer in his prime.

No, I am using the fact I actually saw him pitch and match Palmer (both in their prime) in a hell of a game at old memorial stadium, plus many other games I saw him pitch as well.

    • Everything revolves around the health of the player. I think Gunnar has more. I think the collision with Mateo set Gunnar back and affected him in ways we will never know. I'm no mind specialist but Gunnar is young plays all out, and that had to bother him. I've watched that collision a number of times. No fault - just two players going all out and one is finished for the year. It just so happened that Gunnar got the yips and his batting went south soon thereafter. Maybe a coincidence but I think we will see a rejuvenated Gunnar next year and all stops are off.
    • I’m not so sure the bolded part is true. I think a lot of that last bit can have to do with small skills: situational hitting/running, above average play in close games, generally things that can be boiled down to “luck.” I didn’t see this years team as having a major talent discrepancy from the 2023 version.
    • As great as Gunnar is can’t assume he matches last year. That said I like the odds of the team as a whole matching what we did.
    • The real improvement of this team will come from within.    The 3-5 players they bring in from outside the org will supplement the roster…maybe put it over the top but the real improvement will come from those already in the org.
    • Yeah. -Would love to keep Burnes but I seriously doubt it. -I have a lot of faith in Adley.  - Holliday has huge ceiling even if he isn’t ready to be elite.  - doesn’t always work this way but the better your closer is tends to help rest of pen
    • Nice OP. Thanks for the effort. Like the chart. Surprised it hasn't received much response. You sum up a lot of what I hope for as well. I'd add: I think a full - healty year of Westy will be even more valuable. I think Gunnar has even more in the tank. I want - hope that Holliday can develop into the lead off hitter and OBP table setter we need. And, I so want Cowser to cut down on strike outs and continue to develop as a professional hitter. I think he has the potential to cover for the loss of Santander while Big K develops on the right side. A lot to hope for but I believe these youngsters have a lot of potential yet to tap. And oh yes - I want Mayo to make Roy and all of us proud! Thanks again for the effort! I look at pitching as if we have a base. I agree with your points 1 and 2.
    • Postgame Pedro Martinez and Dusty Baker critiquing Clase tripling up on his weaker pitch before the Carpenter heroics. 78% cutters on the season for Clase - the key PA went cutter-cutter-cutter-slider-slider-slider.
