Blockbuster brewing???

Roberts has been saved by Angelos before, when Duquette and Flanagan wanted to trade him so I wouldn't doubt he's on the no-trade list that Angelos has most likely given MacPhail.

Roberts is the only Oriole that seems connected to the community as well.

As far as Tejada and Hernandez are concerned, the Angels may be willing to fork over prospects now that Stoneman is gone. The question is what can they deal.

Wood and Adenhart would have to be in any package.

If we accept four for two, don't you think Hill has to be in the deal?

No shot at Hill. Probably couldn't get him for Tejada straight up.

I think Pie, Cedeno, and Wuertz/Marmol is a pretty fair deal, although we might need another guy back assuming we eat some cash. Marshall and Murton are options.

Hill isn't coming here.

The Angels? The Cubs?

Aside from Wood (maybe Adenhart) and Pie what do those clubs have, talent-wise, that we should be interested in?

No, you go to the Diamondbacks and Dodgers, clubs awash in minor league talent.......

Are clubs clinging that fiercly to prospects that we have to scrape the bottom of the barrel?

The angels and cubs have plenty of prospects that we could use.

Maybe these teams would be willing to offer a better return than the dbacks or dodgers.

Dave, you missed the last part of that conversation...

"... If we don't trade him to Baltimore for Ramon Hernandez"

;)

If the conversations going on between MacPhail and Hendry at all resemble the ideas flying around on the OH, then frankly Tejada being dealt anyplace but Chicago (or him getting featured prominently by Mr. Mitchell) can't happen soon enough for my taste.

I don't much like sending Pie for Tejada.

I really don't like sending Pie and other(s) for Tejada.

And now to make matters even worse, comes this Hernandez stuff.

Not sure i like the sound of this when i think about it.

Why would the Angels want Ramon? They have Mathis and Napoli...So, if they take back Ramon, chanes are we will get less for Miggy.

Not sure this is a smart thing to do.

It doesn't make sense for the Cubs either but maybe they don't feel Soto is ready to take over full time duties or they think his numbers were way too inflated at AAA this year.

I don't necessarily agree with you. New guy comes in. Boss wants change. Hernandez is an upgrade over Napoli/Mathis. Mathis was good at the end of the year, but has struggled for much of the last 3 years. Napoli has big time injury concerns and his average is low despite good OBP & power numbers.

I would love a Tejada/Hernandez for Wood/Willits/Mathis/reliever type deal.

Face it, Dave, the Cubs are built to WIN NOW. One or two excellent additions and they are the odds-on NL favorites. That is why a deal like this would make sense for them.

Don't worry Dave. How often do the Orioles actually pull of successful deals that are rumored to take place? I have a feeling at the last minute they will demand for the cubs to "add" Rich Hill and Soriano...and act surprised when it doesn't get done.;)

Hernandez an "excellent addition"? C'mon Frobby. You know better than that. He's probably a downgrade from what Soto would give the Cubs in '08, let alone beyond.

And Pie for Tejada is sort of one step forward, one step back.

An excellent addition would be Bobby Abreu, or Fukudome, or even Posada or Rivera, at no cost to the existing talent pool.

Or, dare I say, ARod.

That's what you think Dave, and I actually agree 100%.

However, do Jim Hendry and Lou Piniella? I think Tejada and Hernandez both make sense in terms of what those guys (especially Lou) like.

The question is, what do we get in return?

Dave, not personally, but taking into account what Lou and Hendry might want, what's your thoughts on this deal:

Tejada, Hernandez and cash for Pie, Cedeno, and Marmol.

That looks like a pretty even trade in my eyes. I'd honestly want another guy coming back our way, but if the Cubs final offer was that, I may pull the trigger.

Your thoughts?

You forget how Hernandez played in 2006 I guess, the guy is 1 year removed from an All-Star like season. He also had a great Sept. Oblique injuires take time to get over and Hernandez was also beat up behind the plate. I'd say he has at least 2 more years in him of providing good offense and decent defense from the catcher spot.

I have a higher opinion of Hernandez than you do. And I don't know anything about Soto.

Question about Iowa -- is that an extreme hitters' park? It seems you have a ridiculous number of players with gaudy stats there. I count 8 players with 100+ AB and an OPS of .899 or higher.

    • The money is sunk at this point, but I don't think any polar answer is optimal here.  Bullpen by committee until someone emerges.  It's a little more difficult with the 3-batter rule, but that's how they need to roll and I credit Hyde for being ready with the quick hook for the last 10 days or so.
    • Great sequence in the 10th where Mateo singled, driving in Westburg, stole 2nd and went to 3rd on the overthrow.  Then Mateo scored on a wild pitch.  I've joined the Mateo fan club, at least as a utility player.  Having Mateo on base has to drive pitchers crazy.
    • As someone that was all for DFA’ing McKenna for Hicks last week, I really can’t fault him for tonight.   I’m impressed he stole the base. He sort of had to run there with two outs. He stole it. He just came off the bag. That happens.  The route may have not been the best because he was going to his left and as a RH thrower he was just trying to position himself to throw home. He doesn’t have Vlad Sr’s arm out there. That’s a .01% chance play there.  Our CF depth is pretty thin. I think the only way we DFA McKenna is if Hicks comes here. Kjerstad will be the one to go for Hays. Remember last August when at full strength/healthy Mullins, and only a 26 man roster, we rolled with a 4 man bench of McCann, Hicks, Mateo, Urias/Frazier/Westburg.  Oddly, we’re deep enough into the season, and CF depth is thin, that I’d say there’s a 50/50 shot McKenna doesn’t clear waivers. I don’t know we have the luxury of CF depth to DFA him w/o Hicks in the mix.
    • I think they will DFA him. They already did it once. And the fact nobody claimed him means you’re probably right about not starting for other teams.
    • I had fun watching the extra innings of this game. That was good TV. Thanks Craig for serving up the evening’s entertainment!
    • Additionally, you can hover over the user name you want to ignore and a box pops up. The last button on the right at the bottom is the ignore button, click that and check all three boxes and you're done. Source: I'm a professional ignorer.
    • We have threads asking for Kremer, Grayson, and Povich in the closer role. Can we acknowledge that Cano is the pretty obvious next man up if Kimbrel is removed at some point? I don’t really care about his 9th inning splits. He’s our best reliever and until he gets a chance and fails I’m going to assume that’s just noise and he’ll do the best job. Tonight makes nine straight appearances with either a Save or Hold. Overall he has held a lead 10 times in 11 chances, and the one miss was a bad outing but still nearly a SV if not for Gunnar’s walk-off throwing error.
