    • I am just stating the reality. If I am a free agent, all things equal I would rather play in a big market with more resources to surround myself with other elite talent, more media attention, bigger endorsement opportunities, and better amenities. All the FA's we have brought in under Elias have been slight overpays. I get why he doesn't want to play that game when it comes to the truly elite talent. It's not just a matter of matching 5/$182M for Snell, we likely have to beat it by a significant margin.  I agree, Elias is responsible for improving the team and we have a need in the rotation. FA is just one way to fill that need. Again, I will be thrilled if we land Burnes but I will also understand if we don't.  I appreciate the dialogue and don't take anything here personally.
    • I heard Jim Duquette last week say something about Rubenstein may want to spend more than Elias. Entirely possible.    That said Elias is not going to get some medal for winning a WS a certain way. The idea he is in over his head building a roster is a joke. I also don’t get that Elias not having someone else as close to equal footing is some kind of a story. Do we want to go back to the 2 headed GM days of Peter Angelos?    It does sound like something you would hear on sports talk radio. As far as Hyde goes once again the manager works under the GM. That’s how the sport works. This isn’t some story either.
    • Made the same comment about Scherzer/Verlander in another thread this week. Problem is, those guys write their own tickets. Unless the desire to play outweighs the options available (ie, either of them is desperate), which is unlikely, I'm not sure we'll be the destination of choice for either of them. You could argue that both have ties to the region, but I just don't think Baltimore is the situation that's really going to pique the interest of either of them.
    • Also, you'd prefer Singer to Castillo? You can't possibly be serious.
    • Boras has said that Burnes was open to returning.    “ There is certainly a chance that Burnes signs a deal that costs at least $230 million in total. But, as shared by Danielle Allentuck of The Baltimore Banner, there is still a chance that he will return to Baltimore. Per Burnes' agent, Scott Boras, the right-hander hasn't ruled out a return. Part of the reasoning is that the new ownership group has shown a willingness to spend already this offseason. Outfielder Tyler O’Neill landed a three-year, $49 million deal and a one-year, $8.5 million pact was agreed to with catcher Gary Sanchez.
    • Well, the Baltimore Orioles have been anything but a well run business/baseball organization over the years. To your point about the long leash, we haven’t won a playoff game since 2014 and Elias’ unique methods haven’t changed that so far (including laying a couple of eggs in a row). I believe that he has one more year to show some postseason results (especially if the part is true that he has resisted or ignore the desire of the owner to make any big signings) before the owner will be looking for a change. I have learned one thing about powerful rich people (maybe a few more lol) but they don’t like being told no. And if they are told no, it better work out great for them to go along with being told no. He’s not going to get to keep his job longterm telling the owner no and then not having the on-field results that the owner is looking for to justify saying no to that owner.
    • He's clearly not, but they're already talking (or have talked) and it doesn't seem that far fetched to think they might be able to find a middle ground. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2024/12/mariners-turned-down-triston-casas-trade-offer-from-red-sox.html
