Barton is a perfect example of low risk-high reward. If he doesn't work out for us, whether because of attitude or something else, then no big deal. If he does, he could be a huge help for the future.

And I too would be willing to pay 100k to Tampa to buy the first pick.

Well what are you waiting for  ........ call Tampa and send the check to Tampa, NOW ! The rule 5 draft is tomorrow.

And on behalf of O's fans everywhere- Thank You ! :002_ssmile:

I think DL time just gets tacked on to the end of how long you have to keep him on the roster. They recognize that teams could use the DL to scam the system. They don't prevent DL time, they just make it so that it doesn't work as a scam (any more than usual).

I'm pretty sure this is wrong. DL time is like any other time on the roster. Teams do game the system, and no one cares enough to police it any better.

From ESPN's transaction primer:

The Rule 5 draft

First off, note that it's not the "Rule V Draft," but the Rule 5 draft. It's called the Rule 5 draft because the section of the Official Rules that covers the draft just happens to be Rule 5 in the book.

Eligibility: A player not on a team's Major League 40-man roster is eligible for the Rule 5 draft if: the player was 18 or younger when he first signed a pro contract and this is the fourth Rule 5 draft since he signed, OR if he was 19 or older when he first signed a pro contract and this is the third Rule 5 draft since he signed.

A player drafted onto a Major League roster in the Rule 5 draft must remain in the majors (on the 25-man active roster or the DL) for all of the subsequent season, or the drafting club must attempt to return him to his original club. However, since a returned Rule 5 player must first be placed on outright waivers, a third club could claim the player off waivers. But of course, that club would then also have to keep him in the majors all season, or offer him back to his original club.

Occasionally, the drafting club will work out a trade with the player's original team, allowing the drafting club to retain the player but send him to the minors.

There's no stipulation that DL time counts against the club, or that they have to keep him on the roster longer.

Link? Background research? ;):)

Nope, that's why I said "I think". It wouldn't be the first time I was wrong ;-)

Recently, I read something about how DL-time extends the clock on something, but I don't recall what. I thought it was Rule 5, but evidently not. Nor do I know where I read it. I didn't just pull it out of thin air, but I don't recall exactly where I was reading. 'Sorry for any confusion.

Yes, but ... except that a drafted player must be on the 25 man roster for at least 90 days. If they are on the disabled list during the season following being drafted they must appear on the 25 man roster for the remaining # of days in the following season.

BA's primer used to say this, but I can no longer find it... The best link was the following http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rule_5_draft

To prevent the abuse of the Rule 5 draft, the rule also states that the draftee must be active for at least 90 days. This keeps teams from drafting players, then placing them on the disabled list for the majority of the season. For example, if a Rule 5 draftee was only active for 67 days in his first season with his new club, he must be active for an additional 23 games in his second season to satisfy the Rule 5 requirements.

That's it! Thank you birdsncrabs, I couldn't remember where I read it, or exactly what it was, but I thought sure it was something about DL time extending the clock on Rule 5 time...

I did have all the important details wrong though ;-)

I'm focusing on this today just because we know it will actually happen.

MacPhail said that he expects to make at least one selection in this morning's Rule 5 draft.

Baeball America

Looks like the Padres are going to move up to Tampa's spot to take Barton.

Bah.

I was just jerking your chain but it "appears" that you may have earned some "street cred" with your "thought"! I don't care what boogiedown and 66 - 83 say, "You're the (in)complete package!" ;):P Fifty year old brains do retain some knowledge! Now sixty year old ones - not so much! :o:(

Now back to the Rule 5 chat - what's happening?

The only significant name to pop up on the radar Wednesday–aside from Santangelo–was Orioles righthander Nick McCurdy, who is garnering interest among at least three clubs. McCurdy, 27, went a combined 3-6, 3.20 in 76 innings between Double-A Bowie and Triple-A Norfolk in 2007.

... From Baseball America - I can see the orioles now......

With the forth overall pick in the Rule 5 Draft the orioles select Nick McCurdy:D :D:D

    • They also haven’t announced the times, yet.
    • Well, I don't like to predict things on message boards but my prediction is we will not acquire two pitchers with a better Zips projection than Kremer. I would be more surprised by two than I would be by zero.
    • You can’t ignore how he pitched against Detroit and the makeup of their roster. He has more value than even Suarez if that is who we end up playing.
    • So it is different from last year? Last year the games were something like 3:00, 4:30, 7:00, and 8:30.   Have they said it will be different this year???
    • Me too. Driving 4 hours to have a father daughter date. Can't wait!
    • The discussion about Cle vs NYY is interesting. The Os always struggle at Cle and their BP is awesome but the starters are meh and so is the offense. I prefer to play NY. Worse pen, doesn’t run as much.  Not a bunch of contact hitters.
    • Bautista, if he is back to his old self, would be a big addition. Dominguez and Soto have to improve the walk rate. They certainly have swing and miss, but at a significant cost. Cano can throw up in the zone and get misses, but he is used so often he is rarely sharp. He is used to induce ground balls, and the sinker is fairly effective when he is tired.  Akin, Webb and Coulombe are getting some swing and miss. They are all above average in swinging strike percentage, according to FanGraphs. MLB average is generally around 11.2% from year to year, and Akin (second on the Orioles behind Grayson 13.6) is at 13.2, Dominguez 12.4, Cano 12.2, Soto 12.9, Webb 11.8, Coulombe is 9.9 and Cionel 9.5. In fairness to Coulombe (11.8) and Webb (13.7), they are higher over the last three years. They have not been healthy for a fair amount of this season and pitched through some things that made those numbers dip, perhaps.  Bautista was 18% in the same period of 2022-2024. He would be 11th in MLB in 2024. No other Oriole is in the top 100 in MLB. Grayson Rodriguez is at #120. It should be noted that Andrew Walters is at 18.8, ranking 7th. He was our unsigned 18th round pick in 2022. All of that aside, I am not sure the pen is structured the same as in recent years. There may be some moves there. Or, perhaps it is like you wrote, and they focus on Soto and Dominguez making adjustments to having more command, decreasing the walks. Those two are getting a little expensive as well. I guess we’ll see.
