Mark Reynolds OPS is .731...

Well if that's what it'd cost to keep him, I'd be a little wary of that figure. Then again, the Orioles once gave Jay Payton 10 million over 2 years.

But yeah, anyone can have a bad season and he's been having a horrible one. He's not that great of a defender but last year I believe people let it pass due to the power numbers he put up.

He's not doing much of anything right this year, but at least he makes pitchers throw pitches and takes walks. He's got an approach that I wish more Orioles had.

He is no doubt the prime whipping boy of the 2012 Orioles but after the season he had last year I'm willing to give this year a pass. Before this year you could pencil him in for at least 30 homers a year and everyone around here used to whine incessantly about how we didn't have a big thumper in our lineup.

I can't give him a pass for having a .681 OPS. It isn't even his fault. He is not getting the job done vs. RHP and should be a part of a platoon. This isn't his fault. As good a job as Showalter has done this year he needs to sit Reynolds against most RHP. Showalter finally started sitting Betemit against LHP, know he must do the same against RHP. And your right, he could revert right back to form next year, but this year, despite a patient approach it just isn't happening.

He could bounce back, but I would not give him a 6 million dollar option.

They gave Atkins $5 million to bounce back from 3 consecutive seasons of declining numbers.

Another team would probably pay $6 mil to see if he could get his stroke back. Not sure if the Os should but another team isn't going to get him for like $3 million or something. He will probably get closed to $6 mil.

His glove is going to cost him potential employers. I am going to guess and say he gets between 4.5-5 million next season. He might get a two year deal in the 8-12 range.

I don't understand why Reynolds is still on the team. It's time to bring up Joe Mahoney and put him at 1B. He bats LH, but his stats show he hits LH pitching as well as RH, and he is excellent defensively. He can do better that Reynolds.

Joe Mahoney is not an everyday player in the major leagues. There's nothing in his minor-league numbers this season to indicate that he's an improvement over Reynolds.

He hasn't been hitting for power, but he still walks a lot, and drives up pitch counts, which nobody else on our team really does. I think he will get hot on this home stand. And if he does get hot for the rest of the year, there's a good chance we're going to the playoffs.

Point taken. However, Atkins was signed by another regime. (McPhail) Despite his playing himself off of third base and his lack of power, I'm not adverse to giving him a chance to get it back together next year. However, IMO he's not worth the 5 or 6 million dollar option. I think the Orioles can and will find a better option at first base if Reynolds gets a buyout and signs with another team.

I kind of doubt Reynolds will get $6 mm. First let's see how he finishes the season. But if he has a sub-.700 OPS and 15 or fewer homers, I think he's looking at $3-4 mm tops. The Atkins move was lunacy and almost everyone knew that before he'd ever played a game. Most teams aren't that dumb.

Yep. Mahoney is 25 and barely has an OPS of over .700 in over 400 ABs in AAA. Reynolds at his worst still looks better than Mahoney. Having said that Reynolds couldn't have dropped the ball much more than he has this year. Barring an eruption in his performance through September, it would be hard to imagine him back with the O's next year unless it's a very team friendly contract.

I think the lowest we could offer him in arbitration would be 6 mil. Fair chance we would win that at this point I would think. Might as well go with Davis 1b/Betemit DH.

Tonight. Bring up Mclouth. Cut Reynolds and lets go. He's hurt us so often at a position where you need consistency and power.
Cut Reynolds? How absurd. The guy has a career OPS over 800 and is fielding 1B well, but let's cut him because of a 2/3 season power outage? Come on.

He's still getting on base at his usual .320 clip. As long as he keeps that up I keep waiting on the power to return this year.

Mahoney isn't an answer, promoting him would just be rearranging a deck chair.

How much are the Orioles paying you? You seem to have advance knowledge of the AAA guys ability. Personally, I watched Mahoney in spring training and was very impressed.

Uh, he absolutely sux. Maybe we don't cut him but we sure should give him a week off.

People getting impatient with Reynolds are wrong IMHO. I know it's been a rough year for him, but he's starting to settle in at first and his career numbers say there's absolutely no reason to think he doesn't get the power bat going sometime soon, whether it's this year or next.

But how much have you watched him at Norfolk? .266 Batting Average? .715 OPS? Nate McLouth had an OPS 70 points higher than Mahoney at Norfolk. Don't get me wrong, he's not having a horrible season, but he's also not exactly dominating AAA pitching at this point. (His OPS is 147 points lower this year at Norfolk than it was at Bowie last year).

It's much more than that. It's pretty safe to say that Reynolds will not be offered arbitration.

Under the new CBA, the arbitration system has been totally revamped. Now, any offer of arbitration to a free agent must be in an amount of the average annual salary of the top 125 MLB players (or top 20 percent). This currently comes out to roughly $12 million per season.

So, under the new system, teams will weigh whether or not their free agents are worth at least $12 million a season. If a player thinks he can get more on the open market, he will decline arbitration and gamble on a better pay day elsewhere. So, the only teams that offer their free agents that $12 million in arbitration will be eligible for a compensation pick from the signing team, if their free agent declines arbitration to sign elsewhere.

    • Yeah, I agree something like this might happen some day, but only if the union comes around to believing MLB is on shaky financial footing -- if and when that ever happens. I don't like the idea of voiding a players' contract then and there, but perhaps performing below a certain level would trigger some contract years in the future to automatically become option years.  Something along those lines. It's hard to imagine deals like this today, except possibly here and there for players who are known to be very inconsistent.  As long as baseball is considered financially healthy I'm sure the union would push back strongly against deals like this, especially in large numbers.
    • Thank you. I knew there was something bogus about that post. I saw Cal play SS. And Gunnar is no Cal at SS. Not even close. And this is coming from a big fan of Gunnar. I would like to see him play a traditional power position. Call me old fashioned. He’s hurting the team at SS.
    • Interesting.  We live in a data obsessed world now but it's not the answer to everything.  There should be a mix.
    • Tobias Myers for the brewers tonight: 6 innings 4H -1ER 1BB 11 Ks. not bad at all!
    • I doubt solid MLB pitchers can be acquired just by trading position players the vast majority of the time.  Look at how we acquired Bradish and Povich -- by trading solid (at the time anyway) MLB level pitchers.  In those trades we were on the other end, but we forced teams to trade good young pitchers for Bundy and Lopez respectively.  Now we did acquire McDermott and Seth Johnson by trading Trey Mancini.  So it does happen that pitching can sometimes be acquired trading only a position player, but Mancini had had a strong major league career to that point.  My point is I don't think you can expect to acquire pitching only by trading position players -- but if you can it may need to be a strong veteran that is not easy to part with. Perhaps we could acquire Tarik Skubal for just Jackson Holliday -- or Holliday plus one or two other strong position prospects.  But that would be a whole other level of a blockbuster trade. Also, I'm not sure how we can say the system is bereft of homegrown minor league pitching talent and then complain that we traded Baumeister and Chace -- two homegrown minor league pitchers that everyone here seems to agree are talented.  We can criticize the trade, but clearly there was and probably still are some desirable arms in the system that we'd rather not trade.  No, none of the ones Elias drafted have made it to the bigs yet, but maybe those two would have been among the first.
    • Seth Johnson on the Phillies' "philosophy": Orioles are data driven, Phillies are more "old school". I don't get much out of this but it's a data point. https://www.nbcsportsphiladelphia.com/mlb/philadelphia-phillies/seth-johnson-mlb-debut-phillies-orioles-trade/613582/ “I think the big thing is that Baltimore is very data-based,” he said. “Here’s a nice blend of the numbers and baseball strategy. Kind of old school. And I’ve been really enjoying it so far. For me, it’s kind of simplified everything. Concentrating on basic concepts like moving the fastball around. Not worrying about pitch shapes all the time. Just going out here and trying to pitch.”
    • If we have room, why wouldn't we add Pham and Van Loon just to have available depth in AAA (whether or not they are at risk of being taken)?
