Yankee Brian Roberts. (Update: Signs for $2M+)

I don't blame him. This will be looked at badly but as stated earlier in the thread, not many teams were offering him much. Also, he has a better chance at a WS title with them before he retires.

Why would he want to play out his last year or two with a team who does not want to improve?

Does anyone really think the Yankees have any shot at a WS title this year? Or next year? They're an incredibly expensive 90 win team with almost zero chances of making a legit WS run.

I hope the Yankees sign him

I hope BRob has a good season and gets a chance to play deep into the playoffs.

At this point I can only root for all my favorite O's (Jones, Hardy, Davis, Machado) to get out of town and enjoy success in organizations committed to winning.

Some Orioles fan you are.

They certainly do not look to be built to win a short series against quality opposition.

Still it's baseball, you get in the playoffs you have a shot.

I feel just the opposite. I'm glad the Orioles didn't waste $2 million on him. If he has a good year, so be it, but it's time for the O's to move on. With the O's not being in the same financial league as the Yankees and the Red Sox, they should man the positions where they don't have a real good player with an at least average player who is cheap. Also, while I realize it wasn't his fault, Roberts earned $40 million from the O's without producing much at all. The O's don't owe him a thing.

I'm in complete agreement with you. It was time for both sides to move on IMO. The handwirting was on the wall that the Orioles were moving on from Roberts anyway. They signed/acquired Weeks, Phelps, and Dejesus to compete with or platoon with Flaherty. The Orioles are replacing a fading 36 year old player with a better defensive player who has some pop in his bat in Flaherty.

I like this non-sign by DD. It was time to move on. Roberts may have a decent year with the MFY, but more than likely, he'll be on the DL for an extended period of time. I would have preferred he signed with a team other than the MFYs, but I can't blame him for wanting to play another year.

I can't blame him. If you were him, getting to the end of your career and realizing you might only have another season or two, and hoping your body will not break down, you're probably looking towards any chance of getting a ring.

Personally I hope he has an amazing season. B-Rob was always a class guy. I just hope it's in vain for a dysfunctional, implosive, also-ran Yankees team.

Right, because that is what Jeter did last year.

This is a great move for the O's.

The Yanks get an injury prone, declining player with no positional flexibility and Buck is denied the temptation to play Roberts.

I know.. I didn't want him back.

Just a sarcastic post illuminating the general bad luck of the Orioles and the general good luck of the Yankees with older players.

Rosenthal loves him some warehouse drama.

Yet another side benefit of this signing.

The OH should get together and send Cashman a fruit basket or something.

Also, how could this catch them by surprise when I read a piece last week saying that the Yankees and Roberts' agent were having discussions during the winter meetings?

I don't blame him either, however, some will. On paper, he may have a better chance at a WS title, but there is obviously no guarantee.

Right, moving on from a player who is near the end of his career and replacing him with a younger player with more upside is not improving the team.
