O's sign Cust to minor league deal (w/ Custer Reprise)

He might agree to play for Bowie. He just might really want to play ball for another year.

How long did Rickey Henderson keep playing after he could no longer hack it in the majors?

Some people really enjoy playing baseball. Strange, isn't it?

I'm not immediately opposed to this signing, but I don't completely understand it. I get Cust's nice OBP historically and I get that it's a minor league signing, but the flip side is that he's been out of baseball for almost two years now - probably for a reason.

Also, I see several comments about how we have to fill up Norfolk's roster. Norfolk's roster is basically full, especially for LF/DH like Cust. Let's look at it the probable OF's there: Quintin Berry, Jemile Weeks, Xavier Paul, Julio Borbon not to mention Caleb Joseph taking some of the DH ABs. Plus it's likely someone from Peguero,/Pearce/Urrutia/Young gets sent down in ST. So, which younger player gets bumped for Cust's ABs???

Why assume he's going to Norfolk? There's other levels, and he could very well accept playing at Bowie. Sometimes a player just wants to keep on playing. There are two signs to the agreement, after all.

"IF" Cust have a great ST, then he might end up on the roster.

I really do not expect him to get assigned to AAA, if he can't make the club, IMO

Are we forgetting he's not even getting an invite? How can he have a great ST and make the roster if he's not even gonna be there? No, this really seems like a veteran trying to hang on kinda deal. I wouldn't assume he ends up in Norfolk at all. That's why its hard to understand getting up and arms about this. If Cust ever sees an Oriole uniform again, that means a LOT has gone wrong at the ML level for them to need him. It's almost non-news. I could see this being more of a thing were he getting an invite.

I think the confusion, the first time information came out that he was signed by the Orioles, it was with a ST invite.

Then, later corrected information came out that said otherwise, but like when the Judge tell the jury to disregard what they heard, you know how well that works. :)

Ah, right on. Yeah, that could very well be it. Oh well.

If the Orioles signed a 47 year old softball player from Podunk' date=' Kentucky, there would be a half dozen posters exclaiming what a wonderful signing it was. Cust hasn't played in a game since July of 2011, a year in which he hit .213. He was cut in spring training of 2012 by the Rays and nothing since. To speculate that he will launching them onto the flag court is beyond fantasy.[/quote']

Can you find one post saying this was a wonderful signing? Seriously, just one. One single post. I will wait here while you find it.

    • 1:2 is good.  Elite is a player like Arraez who is 1+:1.

    • Was reading Wiggins write up on ESPN. He appears to be more of a home run threat than Koolaid. He had a pick 6 each of the last 2 years.
    • Starting point has changed.  Given the fact he has approx 1/7th of his season in the books at 1.139, to OPS just .780 for the season, he'd have to drop off to under .730 the rest of the way.  That sort of drop off wouldn't be acceptable to me. I'd like him to OPS .800 the rest of the way for roughly .850 for the season.  The more they use him in a platoon role, the better I think that number might be.
    • Can I ask how you timed it vs the DVR?  Did you use a stopwatch or count click with pause/FF, or something else?
    • I can’t fathom why anyone would want a Tanner Scott return. In 10 innings, he is 0-4 with a 1.78 whip. He was maddening before, and now he’s older. But I wonder if the Red Sox would part with Justin Slaten? He’s been pretty outstanding. Yeah, only 8 innings, but we hired Yohan Ramirez, and he’s been a catastrophe in 10. Yes, I know he’s a rule 5, and the Bosox are in the East. And their pitching is pretty thin, too. But they know they aren’t going anywhere in this division, and they might think getting a good return for a Free Rule 5 guy might be worthwhile.
    • This draft unfolded weirdly.  First with the *nix guys getting taken early and then how no defensive players got taken all draft, and then a bunch of teams reaching for OTs.  I'm pretty happy with how the draft unfolded because I think we got a player that I expected to be gone by the teens or early 20s.  I don't know what we're doing with our OL but hopefully we can maybe trade up from 62 to pick someone up.
