Did he have an extra day of rest before this start? His last start was 7/5. It sure seems to me that he and Chen often go deeper with better results when they do have an extra day. Has anyone run the numbers?

These are career numbers:

4 days rest: Gonzo 4.22 ERA (26 starts), Chen 4.40 (35).

5 days rest: Gonzo 2.59 ERA (15 starts), Chen 3.89 (25).

6+ days rest: Gonzo 3.63 ERA (16 starts), Chen 3.54 (13).

Thanks for the research, Frobby. You've confirmed an impression that has been growing stronger over the past two years. I'd bet their average numbers of innings per start were significantly greater, also. The numbers are large enough that those differences are statistically significant. I wonder if Tillman, Ubaldo, and Norris benefit as much from an "extra" day of rest. My impression is that they don't. Does Buck manage the rotation so that Gonzo and Chen get the extra day of rest more frequently? If not, it seems like he should.

Fantastic start by Gonzo.

And that slider to Trout wasn't that bad of a pitch. At first I thought it was a hanger. But then watching it again, it was tailing off to the outside part of the plate. Got Trout a little leaning...but he's strong enough that he flicked it over the RF wall.
