The real question is (for me), if Matusz has to cheat to be this good, how bad will he be if he stops cheating?

Every player and manager I have heard discuss the issue says the same thing. That it is about gripping the ball and not extra movement.

If that is true then it won't have much on an effect.

I think he will just move the spot/change the formula.

It's mildly ironic that Brian Matusz is a pitcher that nobody wanted near the pitcher's mound for the Orioles before last night's game, and now he is (for the most part) being defended in regard to his ejection last night.

And I agree with those that are defending him, myself ...... I just find it mildly ironic.

You can count me among those not defending him. I don't see how you can defend stupid. Another pitcher was just thrown out of a game and suspended 8 games for the exact same offense. Is Matusz living in a cave? I guess Wallace and Chiti should have told pitchers to be less obvious about their use of foreign substances, but Matusz should have seen the story.

Do you think Matusz was the only guy out there last night still using something?

You got a GM playing manager on a team in free fall and he decided to lower the standard in what is called out.

No, I don't. I saw Marlins pitchers repeatedly wiping their hands on the back of their pants, but Matusz did the exact same thing as the guy who was just suspended. That's like the drunk passenger who tries to drive the car home after his buddy just got a DUI.

No, the guy that got suspended had a clearly visible spot on his arm.

If anyone has a similar shot of Matusz's arm then I will change my mind.

Unemployment with no pay. Damn cheap DD putting a foreign substance on Brian's arm so he wouldn't have to pay him.

Players are paid for suspensions that occur as a result of on-field activity (ie, non-JDA suspensions).

And Brian Matusz clearly went to his forearm with his left hand for some reason. I've always wondered why he did that. Now I know. So what if the substance wasn't clearly visible. His use of the substance was.

Again, Fox on air tv guys are some of the dumbest bunch out there.

Sunscreen and rosin together is actually better then pine tar for grip. Rosin is just dried up resin. When mixed with sunscreen (Bullfrog or the like), resin will turn into tacky substance. So you spray your arm with sunscreen, grab the rosin bag with your hand (you really only need to do it once) and keep dabbing your fingers on the sunscreen.

This is how I understand it.

I went back and watched the clip of Matusz getting ejected and he can be seen repeatedly saying "It's rosin. It's rosin."

Blurs the line to me - rosin is legal and in fact provided on the mound. They are in Miami, not Minnesota, so it's not like wearing sunscreen would be out of the ordinary. And, as others have pointed out, it didn't seem visible or blatant.

Well, to be fair, you don't need sunscreen at 11pm.

    • I'm a big fan.  It doesn't mean I have sources in the clubhouse. Do we have any idea who her sources are?  Does she have any kind of track record of having reliable sources?
    • I don't know who this woman is and I don't do Twitter. And this is what I touched on in the other thread: I don't know what the best path forward is b/c I don't know exactly what the problem is. I don't think Hyde needs to go, but if this is true- and I have no idea if it is or not- he should be gone. The talk of veteran leaders brings questions.  What was insufficient of the leadership of Satandaner, Mullins, Burnes, and Kimbrel?
    • Sig for me is notably rigorous trying to combat this.    I feel pretty sure he had a say in crafting his very geeky title, a reflection of his personal brand. We'll see how it goes here if it becomes recommending Adam Frazier and Kyle Gibson as correct for the roster once again.
    • Again, I'm not sure what the point of contention is. They won 91 games and lost in the Wildcard round.  That puts them smack in the middle of what I forecast as their most likely outcome, though I did hope for more playoff success.  I'm not sure how that is proof I misevaluated anything. Further, again, lecturing me about the importance of depth, when I'm one of the biggest hoarders on this board, and you're one of the biggest opposite of that, is ironic to say the least.
    • Aaron Judge whined about it so I’m a fan.  The older I get, the more I think people just exist to look for confirmation biases. In all avenues of life. Paul Simon wrote “a man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest.” I’m sure if we beat the Royals and advanced and Walltimore robbed three or four homers from the Royals, we’d be extolling its virtues and how great it is.    But that didn’t happen. If anything, there were a couple instances where, if anything, it worked against us.    So here we are.
    • I mean I wouldn’t be concerned about her opinions on which FA to sign or which players are best. But, she’s definitely a big fan and is just passing off info given to her. If it didn’t track into some other things that make sense, I wouldn’t pay it much mind. Of course, someone with an agenda could’ve just told her those things to spread rumors. Maybe Rick Dempsey haha.
    • Do you think any team is too stupid to account for home park dimensions when evaluating pitchers?
