Serious question -- who has the better 2016, Joseph or Wieters? Wieters at his best was better, but moving forward, it could be Joseph.

Damn good question. That we're having this question though makes me okay with Wieters being a goner likely. I commented last night but I like the way the games are called better with Caleb too.

It is a really good question. I'd QO Wieters but not even make an effort to keep him.

This! I was convinced two years ago that I want no part of an "old" catcher who has been rode hard and put away wet. 140 G per year. :new_wave:

Re: Caleb, I was a little worried that after he ended last season slumping that the league had him figured out but he's had a quite impressive sophomore year. He's becoming one of my favorites too. He's got one of the best approaches at the plate on the team IMO.

I feel the same way. He's improved both his strikeout and walk rate by a good margin and his BABIP rose higher to around the league average (was below .250 last year). Obviously his power has still been there as well, and has even improved.

It is very rational to think that Joseph/Clevenger in 2016 will be stronger than Wieters/Joseph would be.

Clevenger doesn't do anything for me... I just hope (without searching) that there is some other decent, cheap, FA C to pair with CJ.

I'm not a big Wieters fan this season with Caleb outplaying him thus far, but I think Matt is much better than Clevenger. He looks like a slap hitter with no speed and below average defense.

I think Ianetta and Avila would be decent options. Ianetta would probably be cheaper but Avila is a lefty.

I agree. I would prefer a catcher more like Hundley last year who is a good defensive catcher versus a guy like Clevenger who can hit but struggles some calling a game.

    • Bradley has pretty distinct splits. I think we throw all the LH bats at him tonight: (If Westburg is ready) Gunnar - SS Adley - C O'Hearn - 1B Santander - RF Cowser - LF Westburg - 3B Stowers - DH Mateo - 2B Mullins - CF
    • I don’t want to trade a promising pitcher. We’ve got plenty of position guys, they can get pitching somewhere else.
    • Scott has improved of late, but he’s still walking 7 guys per nine, he has a 1.4 WHIP, and is completely infuriating. When he was here he drove everybody nuts, and when the Marlins traded for him, I knew there was something seriously wrong with that braintrust. Im backing off of Miller, I think he’s coming to earth, and is always close to a TJ vacation, but Scott isn’t the answer at all.
    • The point wasn’t who was better between Irvin or Grayson, it was that if there is even a discussion, Grayson can’t be considered part of a “Big 3”.  After his performance in the playoffs last year and his lack of command so far this season, he needs to show a decent amount of improvement to be looked at that way.
    • https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/grayson-rodriguez-680570?stats=statcast-r-pitching-mlb https://baseballsavant.mlb.com/savant-player/cole-irvin-608344?stats=statcast-r-pitching-mlb Grayson has a higher ceiling than Cole, I think almost anyone would argue, yes.  But even if we're strictly looking at numbers, despite Grayson's uneven start, he is still statistically better than Cole in a handful of areas (mainly whiff rate, K rate, xBA, xERA).
    • Given his success here and perhaps lack of strong interest elsewhere, I wouldn't be surprised if Lopez would be OK with a minor league deal here.
    • Lots of stats say Irvin hasn’t been better this year. Grayson has had a few rough starts around his injury…he’s been excellent otherwise and has been excellent since he got re-called last year. Irvin is pitching very well but he’s not a sub 3 ERA guy.  He may be a sub 4 ERA guy though.
