The Nats writers and fans have been openly wondering if their fortunes would have turned out better if not for the MASN situation limiting their payroll.

They must not be aware that MLB has advanced funds to the Nats in anticipation of their victory on the MASN issue.

Couple that with the Orioles having terrible long term contract luck, and you could see why Angelos is shy. Albert Belle? Brian Roberts? Nick Markakis? Miguel Tejada? Ubaldo?

I think that's a fairly typical record for relatively high-dollar, long-term free agents. Most of them underperform. I'm not sure any of those contracts you cite would be among the 100 worst free agent deals of the last 20 years. Tejada had some huge years for the Orioles. Markakis' deal was probably about even.
