I have to think that if Cespedes weren't a Met last year, the Nationals would not be pressing to sign him now.

They're starting to remind me of what the Dodgers were a couple years ago. Acquiring expensive name players without really thinking it through.

They still owe Zimmerman and Werth a lot of money. It is awesome.

Isn't Werth 48 Million dollars worth of two years? Aren't the Nats sour on Taylor so they got Revere? Aren't the Nats gonna shop Revere if they sign Yoenis? What if Papelbon is still there. Is he gonna fight Cespedes?

They may even sell more tickets because people want to see what happens next in the Nationals' soap opera.

And they are striking out a lot. Something is inherently wrong with that organization because this would be 3rd big FA to spurn them (zobrist, heyward).

The Tigers were after as Scott Boras would say' date=' the TOP outfielder Chris Davis

Sun

At first, I also thought the O's were bidding against themselves; sports illustrated even had a portion of their article having fun at the O's expense on it.

Did they say the same about Cano? Or is the narrative not there for the Mariners?

Go all the way back to Werth's contract. I think the consensus was that was a big overpay, and I think they said something like "we had to make a splash to show the rest of MLB we're serious about winning" which is code for "nobody would sign here at market rates."

Reportedly the Tigers, for one.

I think the Tigers were about as interested in Davis as the O's were in Cespedes. They did not even make Davis a lowball offer. They would have taken him if the O's dropped out and his price fell drastically, but they were just using him as leverage for Upton and Cespedes. Both the O's and Tigers real interests seemed pretty transparent. I agree, the O's bid against themselves.

All the talk about Cespedes is either Mets 1-3 years or Nats 5 years

Exactly. Also, reading between the lines a guy like Jordan Zimmermann couldn't wait to leave fast enough.

I do think there is a big problem there and obviously players talk so there is a perceived reputation for sure.

Mariners outbid the Yankees by about 50 million. That is well known. The Orioles at 147 probably won by about 10 million. Over the Nationals, Tigers, or Mystery team. Which Cano never had. He was no longer a Boras client.
