Wow I feel like I traveled back to 2002 reading that article.

Yeah, he certainly won't be free, and I am sure San Diego is hoping he rebounds so they can get more for him at the trade deadline (or lead them to an improbable playoff run and net a QO). That said, he is an intriguing option.

I could see this thinking. In a weak FA class and with their decision to slap a QO on Kennedy working out, I could see them thinking they could slap a QO on Cashner.

Good point. They do not even have to make a playoff run. Look what they did with Upton and Kennedy. I thought they might get burned with the QO to Kennedy but they didn't. If Kennedy got the QO, then Cashner is an even better bet. So whatever we come up with has to be better than a comp pick.

I agree with both of you.

I think even in 2002 people understood that pitcher wins were not a very effective measure of pitcher effectiveness!

Let's face it--the issue isn't just the fifth starter, it's the entire rotation. There isn't a single pitcher on this team who the O's can count on to be an above average starter in 2016. Tillman and Gonzalez were below average in 2015. Gausman and Worley have never been above average starters over a full season. Ubaldo is consistently inconsistent. That's the hardest part about losing Wei-Yin Chen--he was never an ace, but he was reliable and durable.

I wrote on MassLive.com yesterday that the AL East has more parity now than it has had in the 22 years since the American League expanded from two to three divisions. But it's difficult to believe the Orioles will be able to stay competitive with the Blue Jays, Yankees, Red Sox and Rays if they fail to add another reliable, proven starting pitcher.

Injuries to the UCL start as early as Little League. Without a drastic cultural shift, baseball will continue to lose hundreds of millions of dollars annually to damaged pitchers, and another generation of children will suffer the same problems that vex current players. Informative and hard-hitting, The Arm is essential reading for everyone who loves the game, wants to keep their children healthy, or relishes a look into how a large, complex institution can fail so spectacularly.

Jeez, Little League. I'd still rather have a kid pitch than play football, but that's got to be a family concern nowdays.
