Just 2 months ago Heim was being discussed as a top 5 player in our system. Now you're saying he's the 5th best catcher?

Not by me. And Murphy and Pena definitely eclipsed him. At those ages, time, passes on. Yermin is the top hitter in the Sally league. Though he was promoted to take Heim's place now.

Depending on who's rankings you look at, Heim wasn't even Top 10 in one of the worst systems in baseball. This was not a bad trade, at all.

Aside from the part where Pearce might regress to career norms and not be an improvement.

This is the same guy that was bad enough to contribute to the forcing Dan into trading for Parra last year.

Pearce is an upgrade to Reimold/Rickart with the bat and probably a bit better than Reimold with the glove. Definitely strengthens the lineup against lefties who we've struggled against.

As for Heim, I know some folks that were high on him defensively, but he's probably a backup catcher at best because of the bat. According to one scout I know he has a one plane swing and doesn't make adjustments well.

Outside of Sisco, this organization doesn't have a top 30 prospect at catcher unless you slide Pena in at the backend as a backup catcher. Mercedes can hit, but his catching skills are not good at all. Murphy is similar to Mercedes but he's a bit better with the glove, but unless he hits a ton his catch and throw skills won't get him to the major leagues.

Heim was a 20-30 prospect for me at best.

I like the trade as it makes the team better for a run this year and gave up a potential backup catcher.

Heim isn't a top ten prospect in this organization. He's hitting .220 in A ball. In some other systems, he may not be a top 20 guy.

We also have plenty of minor league depth at catcher.

Audry Perez, Norfolk Tides

The O’s purchased Perez last offseason from the Rockies, and he proceeded to a slash an anemic .243/.279/.303 over 282 plate appearances for Norfolk in 2015 while sharing time with Steve Clevenger. This year has been a completely different story: Perez is hitting .292/.355/.406 as the primary catcher for the Tides.

The 27-year-old Perez isn’t really a prospect and was acquired for organizational depth, but it was still a bit of a surprise when he didn’t get a call-up after Caleb Joseph landed on the DL. Instead, that nod went to Francisco Pena, whose .491 OPS at the time didn’t exactly compare favorably to Perez’s .815 mark.

The fact that Pena got the call instead tells you all you need to know about what the O’s think of Perez’s defense. It was clear with Clevenger in 2014-15 that the O’s simply aren’t willing to carry a catcher whose defense isn’t up to snuff in their eyes - because of that, Perez can probably get comfortable in triple-A.

Dan tends to overpay at the deadline.

Well last year absolutely, this year not so much. Both his trades this year are solid without giving up much. He's improved his team and hasn't given up a top 20 prospect. Not bad if you ask me.

Our 25 man prolly

Tillman, Bundy, Gausman, Miley, Gallardo- turns to pitch

Britton, O'day, Brach, Worley, Givens, Odrusnek, Ubaldo

Davis 1b

Schoop 2b

Machado 3b

Hardy SS

MW C

Kim LF

Jones CF

Trumbo RF

P.Alvarez DH

Pearce, Joseph, Reimold, Flaherty

The decision is to we keep an extra arm and option Flaherty to AAA for a bit. Pearce could play 2nd in a pinch.

We are asking you. You were right last year. And the year before.

I'm fine with the Miley trade.

Even if the idea of Ubaldo, Miley and Gallardo all being paid next year is a bit unsettling.

I think folks are remembering the 2014 Pearce and not the 2015 version.

We could be getting either one or something in between.

    • No one is trading anything close to that for Crochet. But I agree..spend money, not prospects.
    • That's some high standards.  Sinker ball types are always going to have higher FIPs and lower K rates.  The truth is, Quintana is probably out of our price range.  That price range is probably no more than the standard Lyles/Gibson/Kimbrel/Frazier price range until otherwise seen.   Back to Quintana, I think he's the type of guy that if healthy could be a real weapon for us with our home ballpark and a home playoff game if we ever get deep into a series.
    • That's really the role/opening for next year that we need.  A RHH OF that could play some CF preferably.  Although, I'd lean more to and offensive minded portion of that versus the ability to play CF.  LF is big though at home. I think it's a role that Elias fills through trade, waivers, or maybe even a competition of milb deal types.  Like a RH Sam Hilliard type.
    • Yeah, he would be good in the Austin Slater role if he was willing to accept it. Not sure that he would be quite as good defensively in CF, given that he has played fewer than 100 innings total in CF since 2021. I highly doubt that he is ready to accept a role as a platoon player though, given that he is not yet 30, and he was an above average starter by rWAR from 2021-23. I doubt he is tendered a contract, given his $6M 2024 salary. His best bet is probably to sign a one year deal with a team that doesn't hope to compete, to attempt to reestablish himself as an everyday player, while the team that signs him can hope to flip him at the trade deadline.
    • I agree. He’d be a great regular season fit in Cinncy’s ballpark. Maybe that confidence of knowing he can hit the ball out to LF at home covers up his other decencies.  As for Crochet… can’t we just resign Burnes?  Crochet would probably cost Holliday, Basallo, and Mayo. Didn’t the deadline teach us the cost of pitching? I’m for trading Mountcastle. I’d hope we can surround the young hitters with a Burnes led staff with adding a vet bat to the DH/1B mix. Other than that, I think we will roll with what we have. And we should.
    • Hays will want to start somewhere. He shouldn't start for us. We don't want him sitting on the bench looking dejected while Kjerstad and Cowser are mashing bombs onto Eutaw Street.
