Palmer's Premonitions

It's funny because I agree 100% that he's not a homer, but I'm also entirely convinced that he still loves the Orioles. But unlike some of us, he can turn off his personal feelings for the team and truly call it like he sees it. The games are much more enjoyable when 22 is in the booth.

Well that's the thing. Palmer is firmly a homer in all traditional ways. The dude loves the Orioles and is always rooting for them. If you follow his Twitter, he doesn't even pretend.

When he's in the booth, though, he turns on Professional Palmer.

Well no. They do two completely different things. Vin Scully is THE voice of the game, and Palmer is the analyst of the game.Enormously different jobs.

Exactly. I don't know why folks tend to view all broadcasters as one group. PBP vs. Color is Apples and Oranges.

In my lifetime, I have been very fortunate to listen to some of the best play by play announcers of all time. First through fourth grade, I started with Jack Brickhouse. Harry Carry is more famous but Jack was the much better of the two imo. Than I moved to Baltimore and got Chuck Thompson. After Chuck, Jon Miller. Wow, three hall of famers and a lot of time listening to the radio. Since Peter forced out Miller, I think you could describe our play by play announcers as competent but unspectacular. Palmer is brilliant and I think Ben McDonald could be as well.

I disagree.

I get that one is PBP and one is the analyst.

But in Vin's case...he's both.

To me? It's about being entertained. And Palmer entertains me more. YMMV.

Well, when you've played for a team your entire carrer and spent almost 50 years in the organization, you tend to be a bit homer. I do like how he is professinoal in the booth and doesn't BS people like Bordick does

Palmer is the best in the business. Dare I say better than Scully. And I love Scully. :)
I will always love Jon Miller and no disrespect to Palmer, but Miller will always be #1 man in my book.
Miller is the best for play by play. Palmer is the best secondary/analytical guy. Win win.

Ari beat me to the punch. Scully and Miller are obviously PbP guys and Palmer is color. You can't compare them; they're different jobs entirely.

Yeah, Palmer called it but it's what we've seen all year. Schoop is death on bad breaking balls. I don't know what these advance scouts are doing. You can get an up and in fastball past Schoop all day but they keep playing with fire with the breaking stuff and they keep getting burned. Palmer knew Castilla would probably try it and the rest is history.

Not sure if anyone else caught this but in the 9th when it became obvious the Giants were not really going to give Trumbo a pitch to hit Palmer said, and I am paraphrasing here, " yeah, but they still have to throw a pitch to Schoop. An 0-1 count later, boom. Not the first time it seemed like Palmer could see into the future.

I just enjoy listening to his analysis during a game. He and Earl may have had their issues but Palmer obviously paid attention during games.

Start listening for it - not only with Palmer - and you'll be surprised how often you'll hear sports announcers and color guys casually mention possible futures. If nothing comes of it, nobody remembers, it's just part of the flow. But if it comes to pass, well the guy's a genius. it's a fairly commonplace technique.

The Delmon Young double was a classic.

If you had to listen to Palmer trying to do both you'd change your tune. Palmer needs Thorne to be good. When he's paired with Hunter I listen to Joe. Joe and Ben are the best.

    • Smith and Bowman signed Milb contacts, stop period. which means if they not have 6 years MLB service they make minor league money if they are in the minors. Albert signed a one guarenteed contract, 740k. Itwas A Milb contract to keep him off the 40. Even if he got DFA or never pitched one inning of MLB he still makes the 740k. He was good enough to demand this contract and get it. Smith and Bowman were not.
    • Just because you sign as a free agent doesn’t mean you aren’t subject to the rules around 6 years of service time. For instance, I don’t believe Burch Smith or Matt Bowman can elect free agency unless they are outrighted, released, or non-tendered. However, there are examples of foreign professionals being eligible to elect free agency early - for example Shintaro Fujinama last year.  It’s not part of the CBA, but presumably the commissioner will approve that special covenant as part of an FA deal if the player has at least 6 years of experience in foreign league.  It’s possible they would let Suarez combine his 1 year MLB service time (prior to this season) with his 3 years in NPB and 2 years in KBO.  And it’s possible they let Suarez write these terms into an MILB contract that had split MLB terms.  It wouldn’t have been my starting assumption, but it seems plausible.
    • Here I am checking in. We and our condo on the east side of Asheville made it through unscathed. On Tuesday we flew into DC and moved into a hotel in Falls Church. Our son, Eric, ordered us to make that trip and made all the arrangements because we had no internet and limited cell service. We expected to stay a week while electricity is restored and then we learned about the dire water situation. We are moving in with Eric and his family who have been supporting us in every way possible, anticipating needs and things that would help us. Our daughter, Robyn, and her husband, Ken live about 30 miles west of Asheville , Waynesville, had no damage, never lost power or water. Today they rescued my car from $30 a day hourly parking, threw out everything that was beginning to make the condo stink and tied up  a few ends we left loose when we left Dodge in a hurry. They are, collectively, the loving, supportive family everyone should want and have .
    • You should really try to read. It will make you less slow.
    • Just pointing out that not everyone wanted Adley extended last year.
    • Hopefully he will spend money to keep guys long term.    This was a puff piece.
    • At least Joe Jackson seemed to be a decent human.
