Might the O's have an all rookie outfield vs lefties?

In September.

As you may know the O's have the worst OPS vs lefties in the AL at 679. Kim and Pedro Alvarez do not normally play vs lefties. Trumbo switches to DH and the OF is now Pearce, Jones and Remold.

Currently the OPS vs lefties for these three players when playing for the O's is

Jones 572 OPS

Remold 563 OPS

Pearce 259 OPS.

Pearce did better than that before joining the O's.

Rookies OPS vs lefties

Rickard 861 in the majors

Walker 818 at AAA

Daniel Alvarez 794 at AAA.

So if Adam is beat up and needs a day off. And when Rickard returns from injury might we see an all rookie outfield vs lefties in September? Kind of depends on whether Pearce starts hitting them soon.

If Pearce doesn't hit soon, I think they will send him off in the sunset. I suspect he will, not like he hasn't hit before in the majors.

I dont look for Walker to even be called up, just my opinion.

Alvarez should get called up, but I doubt you will see too much of him, pinch runner, late inning defensive sub.

I have more faith in Buck than to think he'll bench Steve Pearce against lefties, whom he should have an .800+ OPS against, in favor of a AAA guy on the basis of a tiny handful of PAs over the past 3-4 weeks. You don't make decisions based on splits of splits of splits. What does he have, like 25 PAs vs LHP with the O's this year?

This is the second time you have asked that. Can you share what you have heard? You probably know a lot more than I do.

All I know is what I read from Roch:

Outfielder Joey Rickard will have his right thumb re-examined on Sept. 2, and manager Buck Showalter is hoping to get more than just a few weeks out of the Rule 5 pick.

?I think we?ll get an idea how that?s progressing,? Showalter said.

?He was a big part of our team for quite a while and we haven?t had him.?

I think Buck will bet on Jones' performance vs. lefties recovering in the remaining weeks than on Walker or D. Alvarez putting on a rookie phenom show, although Adam's career figures do show a reverse split (.731 vs. .799). There's also his glove to factor in. Pearce will also recover,I'm willing to bet, unless injured.

Buck's already having problems finding enough playing time for Kim, Pearce, and P. Alvarez--and that's with leaving Reimold completely out of the discussion. Can't see how adding Markakis to the pool, especially if Rickard returns, is going to help.

      Smith and Bowman signed Milb contacts, stop period. which means if they not have 6 years MLB service they make minor league money if they are in the minors. Albert signed a one guarenteed contract, 740k. Itwas A Milb contract to keep him off the 40. Even if he got DFA or never pitched one inning of MLB he still makes the 740k. He was good enough to demand this contract and get it. Smith and Bowman were not.

      Just because you sign as a free agent doesn’t mean you aren’t subject to the rules around 6 years of service time. For instance, I don’t believe Burch Smith or Matt Bowman can elect free agency unless they are outrighted, released, or non-tendered. However, there are examples of foreign professionals being eligible to elect free agency early - for example Shintaro Fujinama last year.  It’s not part of the CBA, but presumably the commissioner will approve that special covenant as part of an FA deal if the player has at least 6 years of experience in foreign league.  It’s possible they would let Suarez combine his 1 year MLB service time (prior to this season) with his 3 years in NPB and 2 years in KBO.  And it’s possible they let Suarez write these terms into an MILB contract that had split MLB terms.  It wouldn’t have been my starting assumption, but it seems plausible.

      Here I am checking in. We and our condo on the east side of Asheville made it through unscathed. On Tuesday we flew into DC and moved into a hotel in Falls Church. Our son, Eric, ordered us to make that trip and made all the arrangements because we had no internet and limited cell service. We expected to stay a week while electricity is restored and then we learned about the dire water situation. We are moving in with Eric and his family who have been supporting us in every way possible, anticipating needs and things that would help us. Our daughter, Robyn, and her husband, Ken live about 30 miles west of Asheville , Waynesville, had no damage, never lost power or water. Today they rescued my car from $30 a day hourly parking, threw out everything that was beginning to make the condo stink and tied up  a few ends we left loose when we left Dodge in a hurry. They are, collectively, the loving, supportive family everyone should want and have .
