2016 O's Payroll

wildcard

Recommended Posts

I follow the O's payroll closely all season. This includes prorated salaries for players acquired or promoted, salaries earned before players are DFA, traded or released. A player like Miguel Gonzalez who never played for the O's this year but was paid for him release is included. Prorated salaries show the number of days on the O's major league 25 roster and DL.

Deferral of salaries are included as close as I can estimate them from information in news articles. The defered payment to Vladimir Guerrero is included.

Some times I have to guess on players salaries. Ondrusek, Janish and Duensing are three such players.

It states who has options.

I believe this is the best information you will find on the O's salaries. Sources like Baseball Reference and Cots Baseball contract have less detail and frankly often get the salaries for traded players wrong because they include the whole salary instead on a partial salary.

So here in my O's salaries to date.

Thanks so much for that.... I look at those numbers and start looking at next year. We may save $15.8M for letting Matt walk, but how much of that $15.8M are Machado, Britton and Tillman going to eat up. If Trumbo and his ~9M walk then who are we getting as a replacement at Catcher and DH to come close to what we gave up? The Orioles look like they will need to spend significantly more just to field a similar team to this years squad IMO.

Trumbo and Wiets are going to provide us with a combined 3 fWAR. That shouldn't be difficult to replace on the cheap.

I think what Dan may do is trade either Miley or Gallardo for a bad contract swap receiving a right fielder in return. Then go get a cheap 6th starter that can be a long man in the pen.

He was able to get Trumbo for Clevenger so Dan does get creative at times.

Wright, Wilson, Lee, Aquino and Gunkel could be starter backups until the 2017 trade deadline when Dan makes is usual addition(s).

This has been outstanding, thanks. What are the chances, however, that Trumbo, Alvarez and Pearce are all gone next season. At least one of those three is likely to get an offer from the Os, right?

Ok, but Trumbo for Clevenger was not a swap of bad salaries.

The way Dan works in the off season is to get a Rule 5 guy than work slowly to find cheap guys to supplement the core of the team. With Wieters and Pedro both Boras clients they will probably take a long time to sign with anyone. Trumbo is probably going to get a contract the O's will not want. Pearce is getting old and spends a lot of time on the DL.

Dan will wait the market out and look for bargains if he does what is normal for him. It doesn't have to be any of the O's FA's.

As I said before. when considering the payroll it looks to me like Dan may try to trade either Miley or Gallardo for an equally bad position player contract and add a cheap 6th starter to the pen or with options to be sent to AAA. Dan trades minor leagues for players to supplement the O's roster.

    • I also went with Burnes because of his better durability. Since 2019 Snell has pitched more then 128 innings in a season one time (180 innings in 2023). While Burnes has pitched over 167 inning or more every season since becoming a full time starter in 2021. Burnes is also two years younger so in theory while a six year contract is riskier it would end at the same age as Snell on a four year deal. I'd be happy with either one, but my preference in Burnes.
    • Adding that I would go for Roki over either of them.
    • I'd go for Snell. He has true Cy Young stuff. Burnes is really good but his K rate keeps dropping and the years scare me. The box score for his playoff start was solid but he actually gave up a lot of hard contact. I just don't trust him enough to commit all those years and dollars.
    • I go Burnes because to me the higher floor is very important with this sort of deal. I feel like Snell's skillset is more on a razor's edge-- if you didn't like how Burnes pitched in August, Snell is almost certainly more prone to stretches of poor performance like that. Even if he is more dominant at other times to balance it out. Plus, the extra length of Burnes' deal is offset a bit by being 2 years younger.
    • Snell is injury prone and Burnes is a tough workhorse.
    • Didn't see the video? The ball went maybe 15 feet before it bounced, it was rolling by the dugout.  It was nothing and the Dodgers look soft. Was he supposed to let the discarded ball stay on the field?
    • Rojas pulled from the bases in the 3rd inning after he couldn't manage 2nd to home on a Mookie single (and Ohtani couldn't 1st to 3rd behind him) as the Dodgers try to dig out of 6-1.    Rojas' limited mobility hurt the Dodgers defense on a Bogaerts ground ball where Merrill was too quick going first to second, and Rojas ended up getting no outs on a routine ground ball. Manny with a cagey zigzag baserunning move during the Padres 6-run inning off Buehler, getting into Freeman's throwing lane to put Buehler into the jam. Teoscar grand slam brings it back to 6-5 in the 3rd inning...get your popcorn ready.
