The Nick Markakis 2,000th hit countdown thread

Wow, if Nick keeps this up, maybe he will reach 3,000 career hits.  What stuck out to me was his 19 walks vs 12 K's through 29 games.  Last year, in 160 games he had 76 W's and 110 K's.  Other than Joe Mauer, nobody has his kind of W/K ratio unless they're pitched around a lot (Bryce Harper).

Good for Nick that he's doing all of this too in a walk year for him.  Wonder what kind of money (and years) he'll be looking at for his next contract.

I think he’s probably looking at a 2-year deal max.     Let’s see how his season plays out.    I’m glad he’s off to a great start, but it’ll surprise me if his OPS is over .800 when the season’s over.

I'm guessing he'll want to continue with the Braves.  Even though they have lots of prospects, they only have one real good OF prospect - Christian Pache - who's hitting ability is questionable - and who's value is in playing CF.  And the Braves will have a ton of money to spend next year - not that I think Nick will command a whole lot at his age and with his lack of HR power for a RFer.  Of course, it depends on how he finishes the season, but I'd guess 2/15 would be his cost right now.

Especially if the Braves are a first (or 2nd) place team.............yea I imagine he may want to stay in the South.

From what I can tell, his teammates and the Braves fans hold Nick in very high regard — he’s seen as the guy who sets the standard for consistency and professionalism for the younger players.    So it won’t surprise me at all if the two sides work out an extension.

Those bleeps stole my thought!  

He's 18 short of the 1,000 career runs milestone.  I guess when you've been around as long as he has and been as durable and good as he's been, there's always some milestone coming up around the corner.  And he grew up in Georgia - probably has family there that get to see his accomplishments - that's a great situation he's created and thrived in.

The Braves will be fun to watch.  Nick seems to have survived the Acuna call-up with his prime lineup spot intact as Inciarte has been dropped to 9th.  That lineup is putting up runs - maybe this year Nick makes a run at 200 hits with a steady diet of 5 PA games.

With Albies, Acuna, Freeman ahead of him, if he holds cleanup, gets even 185 hits and slugs .475ish, he could push his career RBI high of 112 from his age-23 season.

I hope he enjoys every minute of the kind of experience Astro Beltran had last year, with the kicker he may have a little more in the tank.  I am going to be mad if Jose Bautista gets clean up from Markakis instantly upon call up.  He might graciously cede it to Austin Riley as soon as the Super Two deadline, and that I could accept, but not that way.

I still think there's a fair chance there could be an Ichiro back to Mariners second act here someday.  I just hope it isn't the marketing centerpiece for 2019.

Walked, singled, doubled, and homered, didn't strike out.  His OPS is now up to .958.  His career high OPS was .897 in 2008.  Obviously this is unsustainable and the season is very young, but this is a fun story - even moreso than Flaherty's.

Bautista batting 5th according to Rotoworld notes in his debut tonight, I guess protecting Nick.  And the lion and lamb shall lay down together.

Nick is about halfway towards putting himself in the hunt for that elusive All-Star berth, and I think ties will go in his favor.

It's kinda convenient that Bautista is coming abourd today, because Atl's best 3rd baseman - Camargo - is likely playing SS, because Dansby Swanson is out with a sore wrist.  But when Swanson returns, I think it'll be very foolish if the Braves put Camargo on the bench.

I would love it if Nick made the all-star team after all these years.  Since the game is here in DC, I’d have to find a way to get a ticket.
