That said Santander has a pretty swing and I am glad we kept him. Hope he can be a real option by 2019.  

Why would it be hard?  They need to keep him as long as his Rule 5 status is effective.  Losing him back to Cleveland would be terrible mismanagement.

Picking him was a bold move by the Orioles, he'd only played at A+ ball and he didn't have plus speed or defense to be an asset off the bench.

I liked his swing and production in A+ ball last year but wasn't sure if he would be able to make the jump, especially with the long DL stint. I mean throwing guys from A+ ball into the majors and sitting them on the bench is how you ruin prospects.

Well my opinion of him changed after seeing him in AA on his rehab stint.  Remember that was the highest level he'd ever played at the time. He absolutely demolished the ball, he looked like a seasoned MLB player on a rehab assignment.  I've heard that some scouts who saw him during that stint said he was the best prospect on the field (on a team with Hays, Mullins, Mountcastle, and Stewart). I wouldn't go that far, I'm worried that the swing is a bit grooved and he's not going to add value defensively or on the basepaths. That being said he's in or near what looks to be a very strong top ten Orioles prospects.  I think a ranking as high as 5-6 is defensible, although I don't have him that high.

edit: Also important to remember, he was 2.5 years younger when picked than Rickard was when he was picked.

With the Orioles leading by a score of 3-0 in the top of the 9th inning, Hays led off the inning with a Walk. He then proceeded to steal 2nd base, and scored an insurance run on a Renato Nunez Single to help put away the Red Sox.
