Luis Ortiz 2019

Ortiz had his best outing of the year so far: 5 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 2 K’s.     The bad news: 96 pitches in 5 IP.    That’s the first time he’s pitched 5 innings this year, in 5 starts.   I think if he has a future in MLB, it will be in a relief role.

At one point, was there something in particular about Ortiz that made him a decent prospect? Not trying to be salty or anything, an honest question. I know he was kind of on the way down when we got him, but did he have a big fastball at one point or something?

Whatever it was, I haven't seen it since he got here. Every time I watch video of him he'll flash a good pitch here and there but a whole lot of inconsistency.

Well he holds better velocity than any of of the Orioles MLB starters and it moves, so that’s something. His slider has struggled to miss bats at the higher levels, but that’s more about command of the pitch than quality. But yeah, he’s struggled to miss bats against advanced hitters.

I find myself morbidly fascinated by just how bad Luis Ortiz is. You have to think he's on the short list for DFA whenever a 40-man decision needs to be made.

Through 8 starts, he's carrying 7.49 ERA, 20 BB to 18 K, and a 1.901 WHIP.

GOOD LORD MAN

I guess the silver lining is this is far outside of his career MiLB numbers (3.61 ERA). But man oh man.

After watching Ortiz, I’d move him off this list.

I’d trade Ortiz for a pair of vintage Florida jorts.

Watching him throw a baseball was one of many low points in 2018.

Well now maybe 2019 will go better?

Welcome to Baltimore Mr. Ortiz.    We're all rooting for you.

(JUNE 14th)

Evan Phillips has been called up from AAA-Norfolk to start tonight's game against the Red Sox, in place of Andrew Cashner (blister on his finger.)

Phillips is 2-6 with a 7.01 ERA and a 1.633 WHIP in 11 starts for the AAA-Tides so far this season, but ........ Ortiz is on normal rest, Bundy had an extended bullpen session yesterday and subsequently isn't available, and Hyde had to use too many relievers last night to cover last 5 innings to do a proverbial bullpen game.
