Posey is probably the ceiling, but like I said, the total career really doesn't matter in so far as whether the pick is considered a success. Do the Mariners care how successful A-Rod was for the Rangers and Yankees? Does it affect the Orioles view of how the Machado pick turned out if he bombs for the Padres?

With Posey's service time games, he was actually under club control through 2016, his age 29 season. He was worth 34.3 rWAR over his club controlled time and has had his two worst seasons by WAR in the two seasons since.

Posey was actually more valuable by rWAR than Machado (33.8) over his club controlled period, despite playing catcher and being in a league without the DH that could have given him more at-bats.

Matt Wieters was taken 5th in the 2007 draft, and has had the 6th-most valuable career out of that year/round.  I wish people would stop acting like Matt Wieters was a disaster.  If he'd just hit .225

Didn’t stop us from drafting Manny.   Cal’s pretty far in the rear view mirror anyway. I favor Rutschman but if Elias prefers Witt, so be it.   Just get me a player who turns out to be excellent.

Am I the only one concerned that Rutschman has long stride from a pretty severe crouch with a good bit of hand movement. And to me his swing looks a little long and with a bit of an upper cut.

Everyone seemed to love Wieters accept for a few isolated scouts that drilled down to him having a long slow swing which ended up his downfall.

From the Rutschman videp I really do like the way he was receiving the low stikes.

Hopefully whomever they draft will have a big positive impact.

 

 

I'd pick Rutschman, but if I'm honest, I wouldn't mind if they take Abrams.

I'm a big Callis guy since way back in the early years of Baseball America.  I used to call and chat with him on the phone, most often about the Orioles drafts.  He was always cool with me and he's well-connected. I appreciate you sharing this.

If Rustchman is an easy sign, then it's hard to see why they shouldn't take him.   He's widely considered the best player available, he plays a key defensive position and will stick at that position, and it's a position where the O's organization is weak.

MLB gives each team a certain limit on the total amount of money they can spend on players they draft, and they also recommend how much the bonus should be for each spot in the draft.   That recommended amount is called the “slot.”    The 1-1 pick has the highest slot, and teams typically are able to sign that pick for less than that amount, because the player has the risk of not being picked no. 1 and sliding to a lower slot.

      I don't think it is really the past 5 games.  It is the next 4 months, potential playoffs, and all of next year that has people concerned.  Remember these elbows aren't just taking guys out this year, but most of next year as well. And Burnes probably won't be around next either.

      It is just a real shame that the Os are going through all of these elbows.  Take away all of the elbows going back to last year with Felix and I would say the Os are a lock to get to the WS and would have a great chance to win it all. I haven't seen this many injuries from a teams top guys in such a short amount of time in maybe.....forever. I am starting to wonder if it is something the Os are doing as far as their training.   Trying to obtain too much spin, revs, and velocity. I am a big Colts fan and for years we have complained about all of the knee blowouts and hammy injuries they get when playing at home.  Finally the Colts realized that it might be turf related from their home field and replaced it this past spring.

      I've been a fan for a long time too but mostly remember a lot of near misses, not tailspin collapses. 2005 comes to mind (Raffygate, Sammy Sosa, Lee Mazzilli, et al.)... what other seasons are you thinking of, to create scar tissue?

      I really like Kremer.  Seems like a good guy and a solid arm. But he is not going to be the guy to get you into the playoffs and he especially won't be a guy between a make or break WS championship.

      The 5 game losing streak is a 5 game losing streak.  I am not too concerned about that unless it turns into something bigger. Every team goes through it.  What I am concerned about is losing 3 starters and 2 great relievers since last August with not a lot to replace them other than Burnes.  And they won't even back for most of next year...if at all. Add in the fact that Burnes is more than likely leaving after this year?  Our cupboard pitching wise is pretty bare as it looks right now. So imo you absolutely need to trade some of your AA and AAA players to get pitching help now and for next year.  This team is too good to waste years on players like GH and AR.

      Trading Drew Rom for Flaherty was not a big swing. It was trading a maybe prospect for a “hope he’s ok” guy with three months before FA. I am increasingly convinced Mike won’t make any bigger move this season, and what we have is basically what we will have.
