I don’t think so.   Also, depending on how much he plays over the final 9 games, he may exceed the 130 PA limit to retain rookie status (which is also observed in assembling prospect lists).    Hays is at 96 PA now.

Hays stood on the track, let out a yell and pounded his chest three times. With such force that he probably left a bruise. He also raised his cap to Guerrero, returning the gesture.

“I love that stuff,” Hyde said. “I love guys showing emotion. I love how it fired him up and it fires the dugout up. Just a big-time play.”

“It’s just raw emotion,” Hays said. “You don’t get to do something like that every day. It’s few and far between when a play like that happens. That was just my excitement coming out.

“I saw some guys tipping their caps, so I tipped my cap back. I saw Vlad Jr. kind of take his helmet off, kind of give me recognition for making the catch, just a lot of excitement from all the guys reaching up and making that.”

Playing devil’s advocate...

Elias was certainly happy to point out the improvement in the Orioles status within prospect rankings at a presser following the conclusion of the minor league season.   

Hays might want to be eligible to compete for ROY in 2020.

Does Mason Williams get 2 or 3 starts to prove he’s OK?  (Starting Wilkerson or Santander in CF at this point would seem a bit ridiculous).

It doesn’t slow down the game.  That fired me up.  It was great to see an Oriole play with such emotion.

Its a meaningless game for the 2019 Orioles, but not for Austin Hays.  He's showing he's a major league ballplayer and he makes major league defensive plays.  The O's and major leagues in general need more excitement.

Just watched the replay, and timed it.   If he had IMMEDIATELY thrown the ball back in instead of beating his chest, it might have saved 2-3 seconds.  Tonight's game lasted 10,380 seconds according to the box score.   So at the very worst the "celebration" added 0.02% to the time of the game.  Even if a game had 50 such celebrations, it would add roughly 2 minutes to the gametime.

One pitching change probably takes 30-50 times longer than the "celebration".

You can dislike it all you want, but trying to say it slows down the game is an absolutely absurd stretch of logic to try to support your point.

If healthy, and that’s always a big if with Hays, he should be our CF to start 2020. 

Maybe I’m greedy, but seeing Hays have this success makes me wonder what if we had called up Mountcastle too.

I will be very disappointed if Hays isn’t the starting center fielder on opening day 2020. And I think he will be if he’s healthy. He will play his butt off in spring training.

Good solid catch but I thought the chest thumping was a bit much. Act like you make that catch every time because you should. It's not like he saved Game 7.
