Will Cobb pitch well enough to be traded in July 2020?

One thing we have to get out of Cobb is innings.  This team is incredibly short on guys that can come in and eat innings, especially after losing guys like Bundy, Ynoa, Brooks, Yack etc. If Cobb cannot give them at least 150 IP, they will be digging into that AA rotation much sooner than they would like.

Thank you to the guys/gals that thumbs-upped this post.  You guys are awesome.  (As Cobb will hopefully be this year).

Cobb will have to be absolutely sterling to get a decent return.  Per the usual, posters around here will over-value what he's doing and be disappointed on the return.  I remember when people here were thinking Hiura was part of a good package for Schoop.  Instead we got the fattest pitcher in Orioles history since Sid Fernandez.  Or perhaps Ponson post judge punch.

At least he's well rested.  Hopefully that helps.

For comparison, Verlander had two years and $56 million left on his contract, with an additional $22 million vesting option. That made the entire remaining contract $78 million.

The Tigers sent $16 million to the Astros in the deal.

So, it isn't unprecedented that a team would take over a big contract. But, Verlander is Verlander, and Cobb is Cobb. If Cobb looks elite in July, I could see teams being interested if the O's eat some money. But, I am very skeptical that Cobb will perform anywhere near that level.

A good partner might be the Angels again.  They have deep pockets and could be looking to make a run this year, after having just signed Rendon and resigned Trout, and with the Astros mess providing a window.   But there starting pitching last year was nearly as bad as ours, and in the offseason the only major SP acquired  have been Julio Teheran and Dylan Bundy as far as I know.   If Cobb performs and they are above .500 by June I could see them making a move.  It would probably just be a salary dump like Cashner but the more cash we get off the books now the better position we'd be to sign FAs starting 2021.

Teams really want to stay away from the Luxury Tax and they really want to hold onto their prospects. The days of Bedard for Jones/Tillman/Sherrill are long gone.

Lol. What a disaster of a trade piece Luis Ortiz has been. Not even a camp invite amongst such notable guys like Tom "I throw literally 84 miles per hour" Eshelman and Ty "who even am I though" Blach.

Yeah, you're right.  Don't forget Kam Mickolio.

The chances of us getting anything back other than organizational filler are very slim for Cobb.

Just as another example, the Dodgers traded for both Mookie Betts and Manny Machado - and did so without having to trade either Gavin Lux, Dustin May, or Keibert Ruiz.

Mickolio is apparently retired but pitched a few innings in the Atlantic League last season.  He pitched four years in Japan, had three seasons as Hiroshima's closer, and never had an ERA over 2.79.

I remember thinking he was going to be a stud and the steal of that trade.  I'm not sure why I thought that.
