ACLS Game 1 away
Britton pitches 9th of a 5-5 tie.
O'Day enters to finish 9th and loses game in the 10th.

Game 2 Away
Tied 4-4 in the 8th, Miller faces two and O'Day one.
O'Day gives up a single to start the ninth. Britton relieves and gives up two hits, allowing the two winning (losing) runs.

 

ALCS Games 1 and 2 were at home that year, not away. That changes the calculus a bit as to when Buck was comfortable using his closer.

Oops, good catch. And you're right, it does change the calculus. I forced myself finally to watch *that* game again, especially curious to hear the announcers' reaction to events as they unfolded (or not). Around the sixth or seventh inning Cal Ripken was citing the "conventional" wisdom of saving the closer if you're the road team but using the closer in a late tie game at home.

In the ninth with the Jays threatening, Cal wondered if Buck might bring in Britton to solve a tight jam, but O'Day relieved Brach and got out of it. After that neither announcer made a peep about Britton sitting, until the final comment of the postgame, when someone observed, as an afterthought, that Britton was unused. No, wait, the other announcer did mention briefly late in the game that Kimbrell was unused in a key NL playoff game in 2013, but I looked it up and found no comparable situation in the Atlanta losses.

I do like to play devil's advocate, and so in theory go with Cal's "conventional" practice as acceptable, despite the bad result in this case. Especially, as another poster pointed out, with Liriano so dominant. But that's on paper. Watching Ubaldo absolutely groove those last 3 meatballs in a row (on 3 consecutive pitches?) was just sickening, and brought back that intuitive sinking feeling that all Oriole fans (except Buck, apparently) knew about Ubaldo from his whole erratic history here--notwithstanding a chimerical September of effectiveness. Just a tease... like Daniel Cabrera, and so many others before him. One final observation, IMO the Orioles lost that game mostly because they failed to take advantage of the Jays' weak bullpen (Cecil, Biagini, Grilli, and Osuna) who gave up like 1 hit in the 7th, 8th, and 9th. Okay, ready to move on... ;)

I was thinking a couple of days ago - and obviously, it'd never work - how cool it'd be for MASN to re-air the entire '12 season, syncing it with the same schedule/date; only difference being that every game would start at 7 pm (with maybe Sunday games moved up to 1 or 4 pm).

Better than watching poker tournaments which have to be reruns considering all the travel restrictions.

Was it coincidence that after the above uplifting upset, the next year's Orioles improved by 24 games? The opposite of the wild card loss of 2016 being followed by a 14-game plummet to 2017?

BTW it seems the above naming format is good for searching in YouTube for any game you want (if they have it).

      I'm curious to see if it is immediate IL or downshifting to Irvin's swingman role is possible. He has been preventing runs early in games, and if it is just stamina he might still be a puzzle piece in the upcoming stretch. Obviously possible something acute happened on one of the pitches yesterday, if so that might make him a 2025-2026 two year kind of guy like Mahle or Woodruff from this past offseason if somebody really likes him.

      Tampa also rolled the dice on him one offseason with leaving him off the 40-man roster when his name was prominent as a top Rule 5 candidate. Nobody did the Anthony Santander thing out of A-ball with a catcher. He was a high school bat who commanded a $1.6M bonus, and some of why high school catchers maybe have 2nd place to high school pitchers as a risky demographic is they take so long to develop. The Mariners have Cal Raleigh now and Harry Ford later.    It makes "who will the backup catcher be in 2025" less of a mystery starting out the offseason.

      Sure, he’s by no means somebody that the Orioles should be overly resistant to part with if he’s a necessary piece in a deadline deal. But he’s not superfluous in the system so he’s not somebody I would expect they look to offer up as trade bait. I think the Orioles will try to deal from their strength in infield, corner OF and C, and avoid trying to deal any pitchers or CF. But if the team they’re trading with is demanding pitching or CF in return, Fabian and others the Orioles would probably prefer to hang onto will be on the table. Like when the Orioles traded Zach Showalter in the Flaherty deal last year, likely because the Cardinals were demanding pitching.

      It’s been a dramatic reversal. His command also looked good in Spring Training - 4 BB in 10.2 IP - so it was surprising to see it so bad early in the year. Hopefully it was just that back injury leading to the command issues and he’s over it now.

      Teams will never give him the hoped for mega bucks.  Even if he was unlikely to ever get much more than a two year deal.  No it seems no team will give him even a real good one year deal.  He will be forced to accept a "prove it deal" Honestly it might be time to go the Trevor Bauer deal.  Sign him for one year deal and if he is too much distraction you cut him.  No way a team does not sign him if he is not being intentionally black balled.  The Orioles could afford to take the chance being a great team a couple of arms away from winning it all.

      Considering we were DFA and losing him for zippo it a decent pick up. BTW, Hunt is showing in Seattle’s top 30 (#23) on MLB.com.
