Hanifee and Hernaiz were the next two on last year’s list, and there’s no reason Hall or Hernaiz would have jumped Hanifee, as none of them played this year.   So that leaves Hanifee-Smith or Smith-Bradish.  I voted too quickly for the former before realizing Smith-Bradish was an option.   Based on the glowing things Matt Blood and others said about Bradish at the alternate training site, as well as the generally good reviews on Smith when we acquired him, I’m guessing these two both jump Hanifee.   So Smith-Bradish is my choice despite my premature vote for Hanifee-Smith.

I did have some spring training looks from people to go off of as well so that could have affected some rankings, especially if I wasn't in love with some of the guys above them.

Interesting clue there. I will also note Luke called Hanifee the most disappointing prospect in the system after 2019, so he was on a downward trajectory. http://www.orioleshangout.com/2019/11/13/orioles-15-prospect-brenan-hanifee-rhp/

I just don't see Hanifee here. Smith was a top 10 prospect for the Mets by some rankings. LH starter with 10 K/9 and not bad walks. Yes, please. I am going with Smith-Bradish.

Hanifee had a disappointing year for sure last year as he tried to make his stuff work with the way the Orioles want him to pitch under the new regime. Saying that, there is still some upside here and why he was not buried on the list last year. Another poor year in 2021 though and he'll be off the list for sure.

I wonder if Hanifee is a Yaz type of prospect whose path may not align with the preferred methods employed by our guys. I wonder if they have a plan B for guys like that.

(not that I have enough information to conclude that Hanifee is definitely not a guy who can click with this regime, a la Yaz)

Who says that Yaz didn't click with this regime?   He had stagnated in the upper levels for a few years before the new regime took over.   Almost anyone would have concluded that he wasn't going to amount much at the ML level.   Perhaps whatever the core surgery corrected had been nagging him for years.   I don't know.   I know that statistically, Yaz seemed like a 4th OF was his ceiling.   And he was 27-28.   Stuff happens.  That one is tough to explain.

Not sure how many fly balls he hit in the minors but if he hit a lot of them and had a good contact rate he could be one of those guys with warning track power that was helped disproportionately by the juiced ball.

There is definitely a Yaz obsession on here.

Because he's the one got away.  And people love to point to it as incompetence.

What everyone fails to understand is that every franchise has stories like this.  We've got a thread applauding Santander getting a Gold Glove nomination, yet no one here pats ourselves on the back for getting that guy from Cleveland, but eeeeeeeeveryone wrings their hands over letting Yaz go.

Every franchise has this happen to them, we're not any different.

I don’t see how was even one who got away.  He showed nothing here.  He’s an extremely rare occurrence.  What he has done doesn’t happen in pro sports, much less baseball, all that often.

It’s like pointing out that we let Jose Bautista get away.

I agree with where you're coming from, but that's the shortsighted view.  The part you're ignoring is that they let him go but they brought Dwight Smith Jr instead, which was viewed as a wash at the time.  And if you believe what was reported the other day, they tried to mess with his swing and approach in the minors, the Giants just let him get back what worked for him.

I will agree with you that it's a rare occurrence, but it still happens.  Max Muncy comes to mind because he's in the WS right now.  Teams let guys get away who have struggled in the minors and majors and they go on elsewhere to do good or great things.

This is the part where I think the new regime (scouts), manager and coaching staff failed a bit. I'm not sure how anyone could have missed how bad a defensive outfielder Dwight Smith Jr. was already. I can understand thinking Smith Jr.s bat would potentially play better than Yaz's, but that defense was horrid by Smith.

This was a tricky one because I jumped Hernaiz a little bit over hearing some good things about him this spring from a couple of people. Other than that, Hanifee was next on the the 2019 list and I feel he has a little more upside as a potential starter than the rest on the list.

    • ZiPS being an inhuman thing incapable of recency bias is not much out on Holliday.    It only dings his 2025-2029 forecast WAR by about 3% today relative to what it was forecasting this spring. https://blogs.fangraphs.com/reassessing-the-future-for-this-seasons-disappointing-rookies/ Jackson Holliday’s numbers didn’t take a big hit for a few reasons. First, and most importantly, despite a really lousy debut in the majors, he played well enough in the minors — plus he’s so young and his résumé is so strong — that his small-sample struggles barely register. By reverse-o-fying Holliday’s major league woes into an untranslated minor league line and including it in his overall Triple-A production, ZiPS estimates that he would’ve had a 118 wRC+ in Triple-A this season, down from his actual mark of 142. A 20-year-old shortstop with a 118 wRC+ in Triple-A would still top everybody’s prospect list.
    • Kjerstad should also get some reps in at first so he can be an option there as well, although now is probably not the time, best for him to DH for the rest of the season. He had 8 starts at first at AAA this season and 37 starts there between AA and AAA in 2023.
    • In Grich’s case, I think his OBP skills weren’t appreciated at the time.  He was a .266 lifetime hitter in an era when that was maybe 10 points above average, but his .371 OBP was more like 45-50 points above average.  But OBP just wasn’t very valued at the time.
    • We don’t have a current combo that is ideal. You have to go with the best possible grouping you have.
    • Yep, we're in agreement on the 70 rWAR threshold.  A championship would help Manny's cause, though I'm not sure if that's in the cards for him in the near future.  He needs a big moment on a big stage, too....as silly as that sounds, I do believe it matters in the eyes of some voters. Not to derail, but Whitaker is a guy that belongs in the HoF, too.  I'm not sure why Grich never got serious consideration.
    • I’ve always felt that 70 rWAR was the line between having to justify why someone shouldn’t be in the HOF versus justifying why they should.  In other words, if you’re over 70, there needs to be a reason for you NOT to be in.  There are 70 position players over 70 WAR, and the only ones not in are Bonds, Pujols (not yet eligible), Trout (not yet eligible), Rose, Bill Dahlen, Lou Whitaker, Raffy Palmeiro, Bobby Grich, and Carlos Beltran.  Really, only Dahlen, Whitaker and Grich have no obvious reason why they’re not in.  And I wouldn’t bet against Beltran getting in eventually.  He’s gotten  46% and 57% of the ballots his first two tries.
