Cole Sulser and Paul Fry 2021

Two guys that have been flying under the radar a bit, that are both having terrific years. Nearly identical numbers. 
 

Susler(31) - 24.1 IP, 2.59 ERA, 36/8 K/BB, 2.26 FIP, 1.110 WHIP, 13.3 SO/9, 2 HR

Fry(28) - 24.1 IP, 1.85 ERA, 35/12 K/BB, 2.02 FIP, 1.068 WHIP, 12.9 SO/9, 0HR

I have to state the obvious, what could they bring back in trades?  A Miguel Castro type return?  Which was LHP Kevin Smith and DSL Victor Gonzalez. Fry is headed to Arb next year. 
 

IMO, relievers are volatile and we really don’t know when our next window of competing is.  2023?  I think we should sell high here. Unfortunately, this is what terrible teams have to do.

Yes. Both guys should be shopped and dealt for any sort of future value.

Castro had 2.3 years of service remaining when we traded him, and a career ERA+ of 104 (117 for 2020 at the time of the trade).

Fry will have 3.3 years of service remaining at the deadline.   His career ERA+ is 121 and he’s been really stellar the last two years.   Castro was a little more of a proven workhorse, having thrown 65+ innings three times, which Fry has never come close to.  He’s on pace for 57 IP which would tie his career high.   I think Fry should have more trade value than Castro, given both service time and performance, but the workhorse thing could be an issue.   

Sulser will have 4.3 years of service remaining at the deadline.   He has a career ERA+ of 131, pushed by this year’s 171.    He could become more valuable than Fry, but at this point I think Fry is a bit more established as a reliable reliever.  

I think both will have decent value at the deadline but my guess is Fry will have more.  Can’t say I want to see our bullpen stripped, but of course if a good offer comes along you have to listen.

I don’t think we’re going to see any funny business with Fry and Sulser over the next month. I wouldn’t be surprised, and I actually believe, that Elias is telling Hyde how to use them. Meaning don’t run them into the ground and put them into situations to succeed at least until the deadline. No Plutko shenanigans here.

Yes we should definitely sell on these two. Wells, Scott, and Harvey are a pretty good bullpen foundation. Should be able to add Kremer and Lopez to that.

Lopez has value. He’s been left in too long in almost all his starts. Pulling him 2-3 batters sooner Would result in much better statistics for him. A clever team like the Rays( who don’t need him) Could really use a guy who is consistently excellent for 50 pitches.

Earlier in the season I thought Lopez had a chance to be a good reliever.  But now he has a 5.14 ERA in the 1st inning.   Lopez is still on the team because the O's need him to start.    But it now seems like he is a non tender candidate if he makes it to the off season  as an Oriole.

I think they will move him to the pen for a bit even in spite of the numbers. His arm is tantalizing.

There's some guys on the pen that can easily be removed for him. Time will tell, but I don't think they give up on him just yet.

BTW Sulser is 31. That should probably dampen the enthusiasm a little bit. And my heart palpitates in all the wrong ways when someone suggests Scott as one of the cornerstones of the bullpen.

The Rule 5 draft is going to be tight for the O's.  They lost Pop last year.  They will probably lose someone(s) that they would like to keep this year.  I don't think they protect Lopez.

There are going to be a lot of pitchers on the 40 man roster that could fit in the pen next year. After the starters are subtract with Means, Grayson, DL, T Wells and Bradish .  Here are the guys that could be in the pen Kremer, Zimmermann, Akin, Baumann, Lowther, Smith, Peralta, and Blaine Knight.   Add to that the short relievers for Fry, H Harvey, Scott, Sulser, Tate, Vespi and A Wells.  

I know some think the will trade Fry and Sulser but so far I am not buying that.

I think the O's protect all those pitcher over Lopez.

But Sulser is cheap and has been pretty good this year.  Hyde loves the guy.

Yes, we could have quite a long discussion about the guys that Hyde loves. I question whether that means anything except that he has a great deal of affection for his fellow man.

Hyde doesn't speak highly of all his player.  Sometimes he does say much at all about them.   He didn't seem happy with his catchers (except Wynns), his 2B or his 3B.    Though he makes excuse after excuse for Matt Harvey he doesn't say he is doing well. Same for Lopez who he thinks tries hard without much good results.    Hyde will often say "we will see" about players that he is not convinced belong.
