Urias being optioned in favor of Valaika earlier this year is the only move Elias has made I didn't agree with. Urias not only was the only middle infielder with a positive WAR other than Galvis, but he's a better defense shortstop than Valaika, has better ABs, and was in the midst of proving that over a good amount of ABs for a reserve player. And yet he was optioned in favor of Valaika's negative WAR because - what, Valaika makes more money? He hit a few homers last year in a short sample?

I'm glad Urias is back, I hope he outlasts the next DFA wave, and it's been a pleasure watching his ABs. Is he a great defender? No. But we're talking about a utility guy on a terrible team. He's younger than Pat and he has more home runs than Pat, which is kind of funny.

I like Urias.

Nice.  But more than (Diamond) Rio?

I do too but Hyder mentioned that he went to AAA to work on barreling the ball better and he succeeded.

“He went down to Triple-A and I thought they did some really nice things there with getting the barrel out front a little bit more on fastballs,” Hyde said. “When he was here before, he was really a lot of middle and the other way, which was great, but sometimes they would ride fastballs up, ride fastballs in on him. Had a tough time kind of getting there. I know that was a point of emphasis when he went down.

“He made some adjustments and you see him getting the barrel out and driving some balls to the left side and taking some really good at-bats right now.”

Another homer last night.

I am inclined to believe he can hit a bit.  .775 OPS in 1123 PA in the minors, .863 in 2344 in the Mexican League, and now .859 in 132 PA in the majors.   He probably won’t maintain .859, but mid-.700’s seems pretty plausible and that’s very solid for a middle infielder.   I think the bigger issues are with his defense, but I haven’t seen enough of him to fully judge him even though I’ve seen a few plays that left me shaking my head.    Let the guy play.

Also shows that being sent to Norfolk to “work on some stuff” instead of just “let them work on it in Baltimore” is sometimes a better option.

I would hope that the coaching at Baltimore would be at least as good as the coaching in Norfolk.

He was in a slump and he got sent down.  He made an adjustment.  Mancini has been slumping.  Does he need to go to the minors too?

If Urias gets in another slump, do the Os need to send him back down again?

This isn’t Roy Halladay where you are starting completely over and tearing down the foundation thats already there.

I hope it's clear to you, now that some time has passed since you posted it and you've had your morning coffee, how irrelevant the comparison between Urias and Mancini is.

I don’t drink coffee.

The point is, LoJ acted like this is proof that going to the minors is a help.  I disagree.  He was slumping with inconsistent play and a SSS of at bats.

MLb players slump and make adjustments all the time.  This isn’t any kind of evidence that going back to the minors is some big help and needed.  Just playing, learning and adjusting can happen at any level.

I didn’t act like it’s always the case. Guess I should have made the comment “sometimes a better option” in bold so you could read it and not just assume something. Especially in a case like Urias, who, like you said, was slumping and had inconsistent playing time. Some players need a reset in a lower stress environment. Some are just running into bad luck.
