Me too. Seemed like he was having success and he fills a need. They must be planning to go crazy protecting their own from the Rule 5 this time. Maybe getting ready to make some waiver claims on other teams guys too?

I could understand this move in a couple years from now, when there is a greater number of prospects that have made their way up the system and need to be protected. 

The cupboard is bare right now and even though Harvey is unlikely to stay healthy, he is one of the few high ceiling players that is MLB ready.

No doubt Elias has tried to trade these guys he has DFA’d, but found no takers. They have been evaluating these guys for three years. Time to cut losing players loose and change the landscape. This tells me Elias is going to make a few meaningful acquisitions. 

This is my first thought as well.  Not necessarily big money guys.  But a cut above replacement level.

DL Hall, Kyle Bradish, Terrin Vavra, Robert Neustrom, are locks. I think they'll protect Kevin Smith, Felix Bautista, and Ofelky Peralta as well. If I had to order players most likely to be taken in the Rule V, I'd guess Sedlock, Knight, Vespi, Stauffer, Cullen, Dorrian, Grenier. I'm mindful that Hanhold got claimed, Harvey was exposed/claimed, and Ellis was exposed/lost. All of those surprised me, so my guesses are pretty much worthless. But it's fun trying. I wonder if Sparks could get claimed in the AAA phase???

Ellis move bothers me way more than Harvey. That said his peripherals were pretty bad and he had bad AAA numbers so I get it. I like the focus on protecting as many prospects as possible.

DFA’ing Harvey causes a slippery slope of being able to justify waiving another handful of players. Lopez, Martin, Bannon, Nevin, Mattson, Kirske, Kriehbel.

Of those I'm really only interested in keeping Lopez who I think we need in the bullpen, and Nevin who I'd like to see get another crack at AAA.

If the Orioles place Sparks the AAA roster, then no. 

I like the list of players you protected. I keep the same as you, but I will add one:

• Ofelky Peralta
• Blaine Knight

I think Vespi, Grenier and Sedlock have a chance of being selected. Perhaps Bishop and Dorrian.
