Glad we’ve got a large sample here. ?

2 wild pitches in that MLB debut inning!

I noticed the 40th round was high school, he then went to college and got into the 11th round in 2016.   No overslot money, just the regular $100K then.

He started in college and the minor league scan he had a 6.50 ERA in the Pioneer his first pro year and it has been all relief since then.

18 hits in 41 innings is ferocious hit suppression, like 2019 Bowie Michael Baumann level stuff.

In contrast to Hunter Harvey, I suppose we know that perhaps as few as zero teams passed on him.

I am going to guess it is a fairly tilted Stuff over Command profile.  A friend for Tanner Scott?

Had to check his one MLB box score. Came in for Robbie Ray to protect an 8-0 lead. Gave up a leadoff single to Chad Ponder, popped up Andrus, struck out Josh Harrison, and got Starling Marte on a pop fly to end the inning. Threw two wild pitches, maybe due to nerves or adjusting to MLB ball?

The same ball they use in AAA?

Just so you know, not every signee gets 100k, just that anyone after 10th round can't get more than 100K or it has to come out of their signing bonus allotment. As a 40th rounder, he probably was lucky to get 10K.

Looks like the Pirates didn't offer enough to keep him off campus when he was their 40th round dart throw, B-Ref shows he pitched himself up to the 11th round in college.

11th rounder when he signed out of college.   40th round was when he was drafted out of high school.

This is going to be the question with every waiver wire pickup - would you rather have him than Harvey?   Looking at his stats, this is a guy who really struggled with his control in 2018-19 but seemed to find the answer this year.

2018 - 6.5 BB/9

2019 - 6.0 BB/9

2021 - 3.7 BB/9

Which is the dumb question because the question shouldn’t be player X vs Harvey.

It is Harvey vs Richie Martin or Kriske or any of the other several players that they kept on the 40 man over Harvey.

No one has ever said you must keep Harvey.  The argument is the timing of it and the decision to cut him over several other guys.

Baker was just in the Top 200 of AAA East pitchers at 41.33 innings, and 1st in H/9 (3.9 per 9 innings!) yielded by a lot.

Obviously BABIP luck played some part in that, but yielding 30% less Hits than AAA Shane Baz in a similar number of innings is an outcome that might have some signal behind the noise.

Among those 200, 1st in ERA, 24th in estimated K% and 129th in BB% summing to 32nd in estimated K-BB%.    5th in HR/9, letting up just 1 HR.

One of just three with 10+ SV - seems he was about the best relief ace in the league, and no one could touch him.   Guess he used the covid layoff well.    Being really fanciful, wonder if the Jays would have selected him for a wildcard game roster over someone like say Ross Stripling had they made it...
