I don't think Frobby is defending anything.  He's just merely pointing out that there are other expenses we don't take into account when running a baseball team.  And yes, each team gets at least $100 million before a pitch is thrown.  But if, as Froberto Duran pointed out, your non-player payroll expenses were at $96.5 million...it could be kind of a wash, right?

Maybe (and I realize I'm going out on a limb in saying this), just maybe not everything is as black and white as we'd like it to be.  If you want to ignore the possibility for gray areas...well, life must be really nice viewing everything in stark black and white contrast.

That said, I was the one that posted the Joc Pederson thread and I'm annoyed about the incredibly low payroll, too.  I do believe the Orioles could spend significantly more than they currently are.

Yesterday, Connolly in a chat for The Athletic stated that the plan all along has been for the Orioles to build a decent team from within and then finally supplement it with players once they're respectable.  I find that to be a pretty stupid strategy, they should be looking to acquire talent whenever/wherever they can.  Mind you, I don't want them spending money like a drunken idiot but at the same time there have been opportunities to add talent at reasonable salaries and they've chosen not to for this dumbass reason.  As a result, we have to watch another largely **** pitching staff this summer.

I’m sure the other teams that are spending 300 million have those additional costs as well. I’ve hated Peter Angelos for years. Now that he’s not involved I can say that his sons aren’t very different and the MASN stuff is inexcusable

If Elias doesn't want to use high draft picks on pitchers, then he needs to do something else to bring pitching in the organization, either free agent signings or trades.   Right now, he's doing nothing, which could mean that he's biding his time, but which could also mean he doesn't understand the problem.

I vote that he’s biding his time.   People may agree or disagree with that strategy, but that’s what he’s doing.   He wants the position players to be a bit further along before he starts spending significant money on pitchers, and he also wants to see if any of our home grown pitchers are able to step up so he’ll know how much external pitching he’ll need to acquire.   But there’s no doubt at all he will need to acquire some.

Sure other teams have those costs.   I was just pointing out that comparing one revenue source (national TV money) and one expense item (major league payroll) is a stupid exercise.   If you want to criticize teams for being cheap, that’s an unconvincing way to do it.

We have a foundation of good position players in the system.  We do not have enough pitching in the system to be good this year or in the future.   We lost 110 games last year because our starting pitching was 1930s-Phillies-bad, which in turn was because we threw a bunch of young guys into the major league rotation who had not yet shown that they could even handle AAA.  We are doing the same thing this year.

I think its possible Elias believes he has three starters in the upper minors (AA, AAA) right now.

If Rodriguez, Hall, Bradish, Smith, Baumann, Baulmer all pan out and Akin, Kremer, Lowther, Zimmermann, and Wells stop being so terrible then Elias won’t need to acquire anyone!

He’s definitely biding his time.  It’s just that it’s not really necessary to do that and what he’s doing isn’t a precursor to winning nor or is it needed for long term success.

Well, either he disagrees with you, or he’s under orders from the owners.

Also, what’s not “necessary” may still be helpful.   For example, you’ve argued that it’s not necessary to have high draft picks to build a good farm system.  I agree, it’s not necessary — but it’s helpful.   And saving money now is helpful to the ability to spend money later.

No it’s not.  That’s just something you made up in your head. They aren’t spending money they are saving now later.

And yea, I think that’s an ownership order.

You and I disagree on the first point, but we’ve been through that 100 times.   Drungo agrees with you, but it doesn’t change my mind.   If I know I’m trying to make a down payment on a house in a year or two, I don’t go out and buy a sports car now.

Where I agree with you is if you have a budget, say 100M for 2024 and you already have 40M committed to that season, that’s less than you have to spend.

But you seem to have a belief that the Orioles have a bank account with money sitting in it just waiting to spend it later on.

Everything I have seen with the O's lately tells me that the Angelos brothers aren't looking to invest money in the O's, they are looking to make money off the O's.  The O's are the Angelos' brothers' nest egg.  They don't have a large fortune outside of what they will inherit from their parents.  I hope I'm wrong.

I don't think nest egg is the right term.

You know the classic diet of Mongols on the move?
