It's Opening Day!

Don't think I remember an Opening Day with less palpable excitement around here (both on OH and around town).   I'm the only person that wore black and orange in my office today.

Of course there's the losing, but Opening Day is supposed to be when hope springs eternal.

Coming off a lockout and abbreviated spring, opening on the road which has not been the norm for the O's, and doing it in an ugly domed stadium doesn't help.

But hey, it's still Opening Day!   Let's see some excitement.

Orioles have won on Opening Day 9 of the last 11 years.   (And in both years they didn't win, 2018 and 2019, they won the next two games to take the opening series).   So each of the last 11 Oriole teams has had a winning record at some point, the last one that didn't was the 2010 team, the season that started with Trembley and ended with Buck.

Glad someone started this thread!

Opening Day is a great day that means warm summer nights are just around the corner. Looking forward to another season of baseball, hopefully the Orioles start things off with a win!

Jon Meoli made a great point in his newsletter, that this is the first year in a while where Opening Day(s) doesn't feel like the high point of the season.

The day that Adley is promoted will almost certainly be more exciting than Opening Day and likewise for Grayson Rodriguez. I remember going to Wieters first game, and later seeing his first home run, the (largely unmet) hype just gave such a palpable energy.

I'm excited for the season.   The OD roster doesn't thrill me, but I think the roster will get more interesting as the season progresses, and there are enough interesting story lines to hold be until then.   You never really know how a season will go until it's played.  Let's go O's!

Reasons to be psyched:

  • Fun little core of: Mountcastle, Hays, Mullins, Means, Mancini, Santander, Urias
  • Bautista ML debut incoming
  • Tyler Wells
  • Guys throwing 95+ in the bullpen: Bautista, Perez, Baker, Krehbiel, Lopez
  • Adley soon
  • G-Rod, Hall, Stowers: not quite as soon but This Year nonetheless
  • Less balls getting by the catchers
  • Men of Intrigue: Mateo, McKenna, Gutierrez

I saw a stat yesterday that the Orioles were 3rd in MLB for opening day win %.  Their numbers were a better sample size also.  Mets were first.

I walked my town (AM 2 miler) with O's shirt, shorts and floppy hat with black sleeves and black and orange shoes, black sunglasses.  Pretty dorky but at 78 I have earned it!

Let's go Bob!!

Sorry Steve to correct you but they won in 18, lost in 20. Jones hit a walk off HR, his last OD here in 18.

2010 I will always remember as the Mike Gonzalez Special. He blew OD in Tampa, and then was booed during intros before the home opener and then he blew the game that day. About 12 years of pent up frustration was taken out on him. Then the season imploded.

LOL - radiation at noon*, Tiger at 1:30, facial at 2, O's at 3ish.  Got MLBTV but probably get blacked out since Tampa is close but don't see their network on YouTubeTv.  I'm hoping.  🙏

* 7th of 8 weeks done today.  "They" say prostate cancer will never kill ya - (except William Hurt???)

Yep, I even remember where I watched that OD meltdown in Tampa, went after work with some friends to Duclaw's in Arundel Mills to watch the game.

    • Vlad Jr and Burnes....my priorities. Then you can trade Mayo for MMiller.
    • I'm certainly not "fixated" on this. The real issue is the budget. How high will Rubenstein be willing to grow the payroll?
    • It will be retired with the first big $$ free agent or extension signed under Rubenstein.
    • I have no idea what you are arguing.
    • Cool, nice work there.   So? Are we owed a large market? Does DC not deserve their own team? Should the fans of Baltimore just become Redskins fans and not tried to get their own team when the Colts left?  (sorry to bring up football again but come on, that fits). I laid it all out a couple months ago, MLB has more teams bringing home the hunk of metal than other sports since 2000.  The competitive balance is fine.  It's harder?  Yea?  OK it's harder.
    • The Cowboys have an owner with deep pockets. I agree 100% … There is some cap manipulation that happens. At the end of the day they have a $255 million limit they are required to operate under. The Dodgers, Yankees, Red Sox, etc can decide each year how much they want to add to the luxury tax fund as opposed to not being able to fit a potential move under the cap. Here are the 2024 payrolls for the NFL and MLB   https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/2024/04/03/mlb-team-payrolls-2024-highest-lowest-mets/73139425007/ Highest $305 million vs $60 million  https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/cap/_/year/2024/sort/cap_maximum_space Highest $259.5 million vs $217 million these numbers will likely get tighter once they make additions before the trade deadline.  If you can’t see the difference I’m just wasting my time. The biggest driving force in MLB beyond the ability of some to spend lavishly is the tv markets. The club controls so much of their tv revenue that it’s an unfair game. The moved that created the Orioles didn’t have much of an effect on the Senators tv market which was likely nonexistent then. Plus MLB is allowing contract manipulation like Othani’s contract. Instead of $700 divided by length 10 years, Somehow he only counts as like $46 million which is laughable. Plus they are paying $85 million in luxury tax fees in 2024.    The Orioles were a large market team when the Expos moved to DC. They could afford to spend with the Yankees, Red Sox , and Blue Jays. Could the Orioles afford to pay $85 million in luxury tax fees? Could the Yankees? I know the answer to both.  What grounds ? Who cares ? The impact was astronomical …It made it very difficult to compete in the AL East without tank a thon! It split their tv market in half. Obviously MLB papered over that long enough to get an agreement done.    They turned a large market team into 2 small/mid market teams. The Orioles and Nationals payrolls combined place them only 11th in baseball. Obviously they could afford to spend more. But it’s doubtful either will ever be top 10 for more than a season  or two as they try to hang onto a window.
