I’m far from a professional hitting coach, but I was the game last night and his swing looks a little unorthodox. Not the setup, or the finish, but more so something with his hands/wrists mid bat path. Like a little hitch. Hard to explain. He’s been super successful so perhaps it doesn’t reduce the amount of time his bat is in the zone.

He talked to Melewiski after signing and said his swing is similar to Christian Yelich's (https://www.masnsports.com/blog/beavers-on-yelich-comp-fabian-on-not-signing-with-boston-last-year) and several post-draft summaries pointed out the hitch he has in his wrists before his hands fire through the zone. I haven't seen him in person but it'll be interesting to see if the Orioles let him run with it or try to smooth it out.

From Roch:

“A scout from another organization fussed over [the Orioles’ farm system] during a recent conversation, marveling at how far the organization has come under executive vice president/general manager Mike Elias. And how the Orioles nailed the most recent draft, beginning with shortstop Jackson Holliday and continuing with outfielder Dylan Beavers, third baseman Max Wagner and outfielder Jud Fabian.

“He was especially high on Beavers, saying the former University of California standout, the 33rdoverall selection, could be better than 2021 first-rounder Colton Cowser.”

So he thinks Cowser was a bad pick.

Got it.

The way some are talking, Beavers isn't even the best outfielder we picked in the last draft. Guys are loving Fabian so far. Both seem like really nice prospects with high upsides. Can't wait to see them go through a full year in the system, hopefully including AA (at least).

Today I listened to an interview of Sam Jellinkek, who is Delmarva’s play-by-play announcer.   He had some insights on both players.

Beavers told him that he was still adjusting to what the Orioles want him to do and doesn’t really feel comfortable yet.  Jellinek’s comment was that if that  is how Beavers looks when he’s uncomfortable, he’s going to be amazing once he’s comfortable.

As to Fabian, he said that the reason he was promoted so quickly is that low A pitchers were throwing him nothing but fastballs, and Fabian is a great fastball and mistake hitter.  The O’s wanted him to see more breaking pitches so they moved him up.

Fabian is a great fastball hitter?

Didn't he enter the draft with a huge problem with high fastballs?

Just telling you what the guy said.  Start listening at the 40:25 mark and this specific comment is at the 41:00 mark.  (The Beavers discussion was immediately before this part.)

You could be a great fastball hitter on fastballs in the zone but have a weakness when it comes to chasing above the zone.  Kind of like Ryan Mountcastle.

I think they’re a lot of similarities between Beavers now and Cowser last year, physically and type of hitter.
