Most overrated/underrated?

Underrated
 

Holt - Sweeper slider, even if the league adjusts to it, it’s still be a big time weapon. Now Gibson is learning it. Holt fixed Voth almost immediately. Bradish took his lumps, went to AAA, made adjustments, then pitched like a #2 SP the rest of the season.  His challenge is keeping this ship together, and developing Hall and GR. 
 

Hyde - a dude that was hired to be fired. The team plays hard for him. We didn’t fold early last year after the tough start. 
 

Stowers - People love Vavra but gave up on Stowers after 98 PA and a .724 OPS. I know this is hard to believe, but we had a tough lineup to crack last year at OF and DH. Especially in a playoff hunt. Dude also provided probably the most memorable moment of the season.  It’s not his fault they we were in the WC hunt, and couldn’t just pencil him into the lineup the 2nd half of the season.

He may not be a major piece but I think he is a well above average season in 2023.

There's more to offense than OBP.  Belanger's career OPS+ was 68.  Mateo's is 80.   Mateo is terrible at getting on base, but he does have some power and steal bases, which Belanger did not.

Clearly.  I was trying to limit my dissertation by focusing on the hole in his game.  The Belanger comp was because their defense is their biggest value-add.  The biggest hole in Mateo's game is OBP.  I think he's overrated exactly because of the intermittent power and blazing speed.  Which spackles over the fact that he doesn't do job #1 as a hitter:  not get out.

I don’t necessarily but most people have Kremer penciled in as the number 1 or 2 starter right now, while having Wells as the number 5 guy or possibly swing man.  I feel they both are more middle of rotation types number 3 starters.

I’d say they’re comparable, while giving Kremer a slight edge. Neither have good K rates and it makes me concerned about their ability to stick long term. Wells’ injury history, and solid performance from the pen in 2021, makes me want to see him in the bullpen. That said, I could easily see him having a better 2023 than Kremer.

Every one of our starters has something to prove next year, and no one's performance level is a given.   I think of them in pairs:

Kremer & Bradish - flashes of brilliance, haven't put it all together yet with consistency. Both could fit easily in #3-4 slots.

Wells & Means - will have to show full recovery from injury to stick in the middle of the rotation, higher with luck.

Rodriguez & Hall - blue-chip rookies; Rodrigues the surer rotation lock, Hall with bullpen options.

Gibson & Voth - Gibson is the known quantity but he has a new team, city and league to impress (and a new slider). Voth made a case last year for a solid #4-6 floor.

(rotation #'s generic; obviously someone has to serve as #1 and #2 for the O's)
