Kjerstad is at the very top of my list of players I'm excited to watch this year. I'm very bullish on him. The only thing is I wish he was a 1B at this point, but it'll also be interesting to see how he does with a full season in the OF.

I can understand that, and perhaps he has taken some work there. From a value standpoint, I think it better he stays in the OF for now. After the hammy last year, he may have been taking it somewhat easy with the running and such. He looked slower in the Fall than he did before the injury. I want to see how he moves this year before moving him to 1B. That may well be his eventual landing spot.

I’m definitely rooting for him, but I’m still not sold. There was no power at Delmarva, despite the other worldly BA. He showed some power in the AFL, but you don’t see the best pitchers in that league. I’m hopeful that he’s fully recovered, and the power is there this year, but I’m gonna need to see it first.

I thought Longenhagen’s report on him was really interesting:

“If you buy that his bat-to-ball performance against A-ball pitching is for real, or that he’ll find a way to more readily get to his plus raw power in games, then Kjerstad belongs on your personal top 100. The combination of his severe hamstring injury and the visual stiffness of his lower half (especially his front side) during his swing should give one pause in both regards. Kjerstad is capable of generating huge bat speed simply by turning his hands over through the zone because his wrists are incredibly strong. Often, Kjerstad does this with a flat bat path that enables him to snatch high fastballs, but his lower half’s stiffness makes it tough for him to elevate lower pitches. He tracks pitches well with his eyes and tends to hit the ball hard somewhere, just not with home run launch befitting his level of raw power. Kjerstad’s signature AFL moment came at Scottsdale Stadium when he hit a ball over the Charro Lodge, an elevated party deck in right field, which is something like 450 feet away. That kind of thump is in there, it’s just not actualized in games because of Kjerstad’s swing, and it’s tough to proactively project a swing change for such a stiff-legged athlete.”

The Blood interview made it clear (to me at least) they don't see a need to develop a 1B, or at least not someone who's exclusively 1B. It seems like they'll take the best hitting - worst fielders and put them at 1B. I immediately thought of Kjerstad.

    • I know. I'm a hand wringer and a whiner when it comes to this team. I sometimes annoy myself with all this baseball nonsense. But really deep down,I'm still the 8 year old who lived and died with every Oriole game. Still. Im that kid. So when this team was really horrible like for most of the second half, it almost made me nauseous just to watch them lose in all kinds of ways. Then all those injuries in a wave. I really felt they weren't going to make the postseason at all. But baseball is a crazy game, and a light switch can be turned on in an instant. Maybe that Santander walk off HR on Thursday threw a switch. Because Friday night, this was a different team. They still strike out a lot, and Burnes was brilliant, but I feel maybe something is moving. Seeing Coluombe come in and strike two batters out, and Webb, not as good, but good enough with a big lead...and to see Cowser and McCann blast two, and Tony again with a HR...It got my juices flowing. Look, maybe they wont play well this weekend, maybe they will. And then the dreaded Yankees might break our hearts next week. But why think that way now.?Urias is coming, then Westburg, then maybe Mounty, and even possibly Grayson at the end . If we can somehow put the pieces together and get our mojo back, and have the players contribute, we maybe, just maybe, might have a little ray of hope.I still think this roster is talented when all our pieces are together, and as good as anyone when we are playing well. So, I'm not asking for a miracle. I'm just asking for a chance to see this team with most of the pieces together again, and compete.Maybe it's even a long shot, but I am still that 8 year old living and dying for a chance to see my boys make me proud. And these are my boys.
    • Velocity was 1.5-2mph down across the board. Movement was good, especially the sweeper. The fastballs worry me at that velocity though... not sure he should be immediately high leverage in the way he used to be.
    • Nicely done. Lol. Yes I remember that with Minnesota.
    • Is there any chance of the Orioles catching any of the teams in front of them with large crowds over the weekend?
    • Wells and Cowser are neck and neck in terms of fWAR. Could go either way
    • Joey Ortiz was in the running for the National League ROY for a while, but there’s too many other guys. However, he will almost certainly be a gold glove finalist, and the Brewers are all very happy to have him. I hope Colton wins, but if the Yankees win the division, as seems likely, I think the national love will go back to them
