I was surprised to see Jackson Holliday pinch running today - I thought he was sent to minor league camp as of the 14th?

He was, but guys from MiL camp frequently get called over to play in a major league game.

I think Gilbert Lara played yesterday.  Not exactly a household name.

One nice perk of getting called to fill out the roster in a big league training game is you get big league meal money for the day.

The players who are brought over from minor league camp are usually the ones who have just a number (no name) on the back of their uniform. In Holliday's case yesterday, his name was on his uniform since he had already been an official spring training invitee. Someone like Gilbert Lara didn't have his name on his back since he had never been on the spring training non-roster invitee list.

Maybe it was Lara I saw the other day. There was a pinch runner late in the game, #87. He looked like they decided to use someone's 12 year old son to pinch run.

The Padres had a 16 year old play in a game earlier this spring.

It's a pretty impressive interview.

Joe Nuxhall pitched in a major league game as a 15-year old and went on to have a 30 rWAR career.

This kid is a signing out of Venezuela.  Correct?

How is it that he has no accent whatsoever?  Sounds like he grew up in the States.

According to an article online... he was raised bilingual likely because his father, uncle and grandfather all learned to speak English and understand the importance.

He had been on the Padres’ radar since they missed out in their pursuit of Salas’ older brother, who signed with the Marlins for $2.8 million in 2019.

José Salas Jr. is currently ranked No. 5 in Miami’s system by MLB.com.

The Salas’ father played in the Braves’ system, an uncle played in the Blue Jays system and a grandfather played in the Astros’ and Royals’ systems.....

 His English was already so polished that the Padres had no problem trotting him out for an interview on a national cable program shortly after his signing, although his media savvy is a distant second to the ability to communicate as he quarterbacks a pitching staff.

“Being bilingual in the game of baseball is important, as a leader and a catcher,” Salas said. “You’ve got to be a leader. You have to make sure all guys can connect in a clubhouse setting and we can all be a family. Super important.”
