And he saved the pen. Toronto’s approach was horrible.  Barely made him throw any pitches when the pen was limited tonight.

In a nutshell, this may be the underlying reason the BJs have under achieved this year. I wonder whether John Schneider will be retained if they don't make the playoffs. The talent is there, the performance is not.

Decent outing from Gibson last night (6 IP, 3 ER), though I think he might have struggled against a better lineup.  Only 3 strikeouts, and it bothered me that he issued walks to weak hitters Trey Cabbage and Brett Phillips in the 2nd and 3rd innings.   Generally, he was having trouble finding the glove side corner of the plate, especially to RH batters.   On the plus side, he induced three DP grounders.   He’d only thrown 87 pitches through 6 innings (54 strikes), but I thought Hyde did the right thing to go to the bullpen in the 7th, knowing that the team has an off day today.

He should not pitch in the playoffs, I would leave him off the playoff roster

Really good article here about Gibson’s influence in the Orioles’ clubhouse and his charitable work that earned him the O’s Roberto Clemente Award nomination (he was nominated twice previously by the Twins and Phillies).   You read this stuff and you understand why it would be very difficult to pull Gibson from the rotation or leave him off the playoff roster, from a clubhouse culture point of view, even when the numbers suggest otherwise.

If there’s a silver lining in tonight’s 1-0 loss, it’s the spectacular 6.2 innings we got from Kyle Gibson.  The bullpen has been running on fumes after 4 short starts and Gibson gave most of them a break.  Great outing by him and I hope it bodes well for his remaining starts.

    • Burnes and Rodriguez have to be lights out and we need DC to come back and be the excellent pitcher he has been but we also know he’s not a 5-6 inning saves guy. It’s hard to envision us winning an AL pennant, much less a WS, relying on Kimbrel in the highest of leverage situations and a lot of innings going to guys like Irvin, Kremer and Cano.
    • If the O's investigate Bauer and find nothing criminal in his background and believe he will not be a negative influence in the clubhouse, then no problem signing him to a one year deal for the league minimum.  Bauer is hungry, he has shown in the past he can pitch well and the O's need help in the rotation.   Every time a proposal is made for a starting pitcher, quite a few people balk at including a top prospect.  Giving Bauer an audition for a month allows the O's to possibly add a huge upgrade to the rotation at zero cost in prospects.   A month from now, if Bauer is not the answer, the O's can then trade an elite prospect to upgrade the rotation.  Having the three spots in the rotation filled by Kraemer, Povich, Irvin and Suarez isn't going to be good enough the rest of the season. At least in the last sexual assault allegation against Bauer, the accuser was eventually found to have made it up.
    • 101 K in 70 IP in AAA. He’s 2nd in all of milb in K. We pound the table for our hitting prospects like Kjerstad and Norby, why not McDermott?   We can back off Suarez and put him in the pen. Heck, we could go back to Suarez in a few weeks if we need to, but this would be a load management move. Suarez threw some innings in winter ball too. It looks like that is adding up.
    • From Fansided: 3 Orioles trade packages working together to overtake Yankees in AL East
    • I’m only trading Basallo for Webb + Doval the closer. Basallo has done things at 19 that names like Acuna and Soto have done. RC+ in AA at 19. Rare company.
    • Maton was just a temp move while Westburg was banged up. Remember we had been rotating Ljerstad and Stowers through AAA/MLB to keep them getting regular ABs.  Really a vet RH OF that can play CF fits this role much better. If Daniel Johnson were RH he’d be up. If Daz Cameron were still here, he’d be up.
