3 consecutive outings where he has lowered his ERA. Progress?

Good to see. I think sometimes we forget that not all prospects are prodigies. Some (most) just have a lot of talent but need to develop.

I know this...if the choice is between a high k rate and a low era, I'm taking the k rate. Povich can miss bats. He can learn to miss hard contact, or fall back to the bullpen. But if he wasn't missing bats in AA, I'd be much more worried.

Povich may not have made the big jump that we had hoped for, but the stuff is definitely there. I think he's still growing into his body a bit and once that's done the command should come around. If he ever could gain some lower half weight he could really gain some intriguing velocity.

Either way, I'm still high on hi as a starting pitching prospect but he may be a guy that just takes a little more time.

Agreed.  Good to hear your take though!

Do you think he will be ready to contribute in the second half next year?

I've heard a scout say that he believes Povich projects to be a back end rotation starter.

I know we can’t keep everyone, but I really want to see what can become of Ortiz, Povich, and McDermott.  There isn’t much of anything in the market that I want that I would want to give them up for. In some ways, I would be more willing to deal Ortiz of the three just because it is a position of strength.

Povich is averaging 13.06 K/9. That comfortably leads the Eastern League.  Given the dearth of arms in the system, I would be very reluctant to move someone with big league stuff who just has command issues.

Same here.  I'm a Povich fan and want to see him in orange to start his career.

Awesome!

At the same time, I wonder if this is a way to remind the market how good he's been...

Why?  Yes he can strike batters out but it doesn't look like he dominated AA.

Because he's a LHP?  He's shown flashes of dominance against higher ceiling/lower experienced AA players.  BBs and HRs have hurt him.  He needs to show some pitchability against more experienced AAA hitters.  AAA will be a big test for him.

Almost as if dominating at a level isn't actually a requirement for promotion in all cases.

We all know the O’s use internal metrics that are not always in line with what’s on the back of a baseball card.  Still, I can’t discern what about Povich is better now than it was in April.   Good luck to him in AAA.
