Shohei's 2023 LA Angels

Awful luck for the Shohei. Probably just cost him several hundred million dollars.

The Angels look worse and worse for keeping him although maybe this makes it more likely that they keep him.

And to make matters worse, Trout’s hand didn’t heal properly, so he is back on the IL. Hamate bones are terrible injuries.

I'm sure Ohtani will still get a $500 million deal.  Laughable how poorly run Angel's are.

  • 4 weeks later...

Angels star Shohei Ohtani will miss the remainder of the season because of a right oblique muscle injury he has been nursing for nearly two weeks, the Angels announced Saturday.

Ohtani, who is set to become a free agent after the World Series and might have played in his final game with the Angels, was placed on the 10-day injured list. The announcement comes a day after reporters covering Friday night’s game between the Angels and Detroit Tigers noticed most of the items in Ohtani’s clubhouse locker had been removed.

I read an update today. Ohtani will be getting Tommy John Surgury. His locker was already cleaned out and his water bottle was found in the trash. He will remain with the team until the end of the season, but this is the end of the road for Ohtani in an Angels uniform.

The question now becomes when can he pitch again? He probably won't be able to pitch at all next season so I don't know how that affects his free agency.

This is always the risk when you're in a contract year. Maybe he gets a short term smaller deal to get through the rehab after TJ Surgury, and then enters free agency again soon after? Or maybe some team takes a long term approach and invests in his recovery?

I want to see what happens with this.

If a team really wants him, I’d think they go big this offseason. Harper has a close to 3 WAR this season coming back from TJ. You’d just get the pitching side to him one year later.

So do the Angels give him a QO?   They need to to get a draft pick.  But if they do, he could accept and they’re paying $19 mm for a player to do rehab.

That has been a crazy situation for the franchise, and is now getting even crazier. Would love Trout as our LF, but the contract is an albatross, his health is questionable, and even if they ate some of the money, that would be forcing us to give up prospects that are probably better targeted to trading for Bradish / Cano type pitching prospects.

I do feel for Ohtani, what he is doing on the field is beyond epic, and I hope he recovers fully. For a National League team.
