Anyone here remember *Doyle* Alexander? Everybody was disappointed in him as the main return for Frank Robinson (and Pete Richert), but he ended up having a very illustrious career. And when we traded him to the Yankees (along with Elrod, Grant Jackson, and Ken Holtzman), we got back a great, long-term haul: Dempsey, Tippy, Scott MacGregor, and Rudy May!

My memory of Doyle Alexander is he was traded to the Tigers in 1987 and proceeded to go 9-0 for them down the stretch.

And very late in his career, the Tigers traded for him in the 1987 pennant race and he went 9-0 for them down the stretch and helped the Tigers win the AL East.

But Detroit did give up a young kid to get him, by the name of Smoltz.

I remember him going 9-0 with Detroit after a mid-season trade back in 1987.  That year was such an offensive explosion, and he put up something like a 1.50 era.
