KANSAS CITY — The Royals made their first move of the Trade Deadline season by sending power reliever Aroldis Chapman to the Rangers for two Minor Leaguers.

In return, the Royals acquired lefty pitcher Cole Ragans, who has appeared out of the Rangers' bullpen this season but is viewed as a long-term starter, and Dominican Summer League outfielder Roni Cabrera.

He would have been a big boost. I think that adding to dominant bp guys will help us go deep in the playoffs.

They might like Ragans. He seems roughly equivalent to Povich. And Cabrera is a 17 year old putting up a 1.089 OPS in the DSL with more walks than Ks. A potential rotation piece and a nice looking lottery ticket doesn't seem crazy.

Yes, a good lottery ticket and a lefty with some upside. That deal is there for them in 3 weeks though.

Maybe. Or maybe the Rangers move on to another target if the Royals stall and no one else is offering a pitching prospect they like as much (yet). You never know.

They could easily beat almost any offer, given the current state of the farm. Would you have been willing to give up something more than Povich and a good DSL prospect for 3 months of Chapman? It could be that the Royals were determined to add a good pitching prospect, and Elias wasn't willing to give one up, given how focused he was on acquiring them last summer.
