One thing about Mateo - he is very intelligent in the field.  He understands where the play is and where to positron himself and throw.   He is a smart fielder

Yes, there have been multiple examples of him possibly being too wedded to something on paper without being willing to adapt to what's unfolding in front of him...perhaps.

Which is why it's frustrating to see Mateo his this poorly. He could be a below average hitter and justify being a starting player, but it's hard when he hits this bad even being a great defender.
