Kevin Brown absence explained?

As stupid as the Yankees' facial hair rule is, notice that they're completely open about it. They don't deny that the rule exists. The Orioles' leadership was hoping to quietly reinstate Kevin Brown on Friday and pretend nothing unusual had happened. John Angelos is reportedly (per Dan Connolly) furious that the reason for Brown's absence was leaked. That suggests that either Angelos or the people around Angelos are fully aware of how insane the suspension sounds to normal people and needed to be a secret.

Of course, it's completely ludicrous. It's like some Venezulean strongman exiling a cabinet member to a remote jungle compound for using his salt shaker at a state dinner.

Naw, just since El Gordo stopped posting.

I am honestly concerned that El Gordo may have passed away.  Ditto for Philip and Redskins Rick.  All three were pretty prolific posters and stopped very suddenly without any apparent precipitating event.

I checked before I posted.  He last posted two years ago but checked in a year ago.  Hopefully that means he just tired of us all.

How about those stupid segments where they eat and praise various OPACY food offerings? When did those in-game commercials start?

Even those felt more like a "what's new at the yard" segment than anything else. With so many quality food options (apparently, anyway), not a bad way to get the word out. Not all that commercially to me, either.

Maybe I'm just hella naïve.

I don't see an issue with a dress code for on-air personalities employed by the team. It's one of the easiest forms of branding and way easier than creating a dress code that doesn't include Os gear.

Promoting the clothes as a revenue stream feels like a side-effect some may experience - otherwise we'd see less uniformity. I'm not suggesting they aren't motivated by money, but I doubt wearing Os shirts is about selling Os shirts as the top strategy there.

Edit: maybe I missed we were discussing radio folks not tv folks, but hey - I am still okay with it. I'd even assume it was consistent no matter what since they represent the team and they are visible to people even if it is just those in and around the broadcasting booth (for radio).

Hear, hear. Folks haranguing MASN for having some form of brand/dress code are being way over the top. There's nothing wrong with it. That said - forcing employees to buy their own O's merch is asinine (if true). That should be reimbursed and/or provided by the team.

Well of course he is, given that he’s been absolutely roasted for it.

Unfortunately, this is all going to end with Brown and the Orioles quietly parting ways in the offseason, to the detriment of those Orioles fans who think he’s our best PBP guy (and I think a significant majority feel that way - poll to follow).  I don’t see any other way this can end, and thst sucks.

I agree that it most likely will end with them parting ways and that will be ashamed for the fans for losing a good young play by play broadcaster. Saying that, a big pay raise and a multi-year contract could calm the situation. But o course if that happened, it would show Angelos had to eat crow and he's not going to do that.

Eat crow and spend more.

IMO, there's no doubt. He NEVER wears a hat, and for the first time (that I've noticed, and I watch a shameful amount of O's pre/postgame content) to be on THIS day of all days, following the morning interview with Britt and all of the KB noise, there's no doubt in my mind.

As for the complaint about the O's gear, I honestly don't get the outrage on this point. For context, I really only watch O's games, so I don't know what other TV crews wear, but apparently it's whatever they want as long as it's professional and will look good on TV. At least this year, they're giving our TV crew a ton of options from night to night. In previous years, there was just one horrible cement grey shirt they all wore and it was awful. Now it looks like they're wearing the stuff they sell in the team shop. I never got the impression that they were advertising the gear this way, but it's not a stretch to think they are.

They have a blurb they put up pretty quickly at the bottom of the screen that says (paraphrasing) announcers gear supplied by the Orioles Team store; although the hat Rob Long wore last night to be passively aggressive towards managements policy  looked liked he bought it off a street vender about 20 years ago.

This made me chuckle, from Fangraphs chat.

Quote

Phil: Can you explain this Orioles broadcaster controversy? Don’t they have a PR person to tell them they’re going to be hammered over this? And an HR person to observe that Brown was just literally doing his job? They used to be bad and now they’re good–it’s not like that’s some sort of company secret. I’m not just grumbling (though I am)–I really don’t understand what they expected to happen.

Quote

Jay Jaffe: The Orioles have an idiot man-baby for an owner. Brown was reading a stat from the notes that the team prepared for that day’s broadcast – they didn’t need vetting from a PR person because no sane person would have thought such a tidbit about the team’s improvement would have inflamed even the most idiotic man-baby.

I doubt JA really comprehends how petty his actions are or how they are being perceived.  JA is probably so insulated by his subordinates, that he doesn't read or know about the reactions.  He also is probably too arrogant and self-absorbed to be capable of self-introspection or to change a bad decision.

I'm the worst poster of all time.

Well, you passed me in career rep.   Of course, I stopped actively posting in 2019, so that helped you.   The board is better for it as well. 🤣

Topic on hand, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.  Not a bit surprised by this.  Every time an Angelos intervenes, it's a disaster.

Back when Frank Wren was here, John was promoted to executive VP.  https://www.baltimoresun.com/news/bs-xpm-1999-03-01-9903010003-story.html

On at least one occasion, Wren was trying to conduct business with another club.   John Angelos jumped in on the telephone call and Wren told him to get off the line.  And they want you to believe Wren was fired over Ripken missing a team plane.

When it came time to negotiate a new site for Spring Training, John bungled the negotiations, so Peter had to step in to complete the deal with Sarasota.  Since MASN was created, Peter put John in charge of it.   How has that worked out?

I do give John credit for seemingly let Elias run things.

How would we even know if most of us disappeared? Corn, you need to let us know your cult name so when you go all Heaven's Gate on us we can pick it out of the newscasts.

    • They also haven’t announced the times, yet.
    • Well, I don't like to predict things on message boards but my prediction is we will not acquire two pitchers with a better Zips projection than Kremer. I would be more surprised by two than I would be by zero.
    • You can’t ignore how he pitched against Detroit and the makeup of their roster. He has more value than even Suarez if that is who we end up playing.
    • So it is different from last year? Last year the games were something like 3:00, 4:30, 7:00, and 8:30.   Have they said it will be different this year???
    • Me too. Driving 4 hours to have a father daughter date. Can't wait!
    • The discussion about Cle vs NYY is interesting. The Os always struggle at Cle and their BP is awesome but the starters are meh and so is the offense. I prefer to play NY. Worse pen, doesn’t run as much.  Not a bunch of contact hitters.
    • Bautista, if he is back to his old self, would be a big addition. Dominguez and Soto have to improve the walk rate. They certainly have swing and miss, but at a significant cost. Cano can throw up in the zone and get misses, but he is used so often he is rarely sharp. He is used to induce ground balls, and the sinker is fairly effective when he is tired.  Akin, Webb and Coulombe are getting some swing and miss. They are all above average in swinging strike percentage, according to FanGraphs. MLB average is generally around 11.2% from year to year, and Akin (second on the Orioles behind Grayson 13.6) is at 13.2, Dominguez 12.4, Cano 12.2, Soto 12.9, Webb 11.8, Coulombe is 9.9 and Cionel 9.5. In fairness to Coulombe (11.8) and Webb (13.7), they are higher over the last three years. They have not been healthy for a fair amount of this season and pitched through some things that made those numbers dip, perhaps.  Bautista was 18% in the same period of 2022-2024. He would be 11th in MLB in 2024. No other Oriole is in the top 100 in MLB. Grayson Rodriguez is at #120. It should be noted that Andrew Walters is at 18.8, ranking 7th. He was our unsigned 18th round pick in 2022. All of that aside, I am not sure the pen is structured the same as in recent years. There may be some moves there. Or, perhaps it is like you wrote, and they focus on Soto and Dominguez making adjustments to having more command, decreasing the walks. Those two are getting a little expensive as well. I guess we’ll see.
