Names from the back of the memory...

So I'm watching MLB Network today, and they start showing Randy Johnson's 19-K game against the White Sox from 1997. And as they go through the starting defense for Chicago, I'm recognizing most of the names (Thomas, Belle, Durham, Cameron*) and not others (Chris Snopek, Lyle Mouton-despite his short stint with the Orioles).

*I didn't know Cameron played for the White Sox back then, and not only that, was traded to Cincinnati for Konerko that offseason before eventually going to Seattle for Griffey later. Not to go off on too much of a tangent, but has any one player, let alone a quality player like Cameron, been traded for as many quality players as Cameron? Konerko, Griffey and later for Xavier Nady.

One of the names caught in my mind, however: Ron Karkovice.

Now, he was a decent player. Backed up Carlton Fisk for a while before starting himself for a couple years. A couple decent years for a catcher. But there was really no reason for his name to catch in my mind except that I knew the name but hadn't thought about him in a decade.

Anyone else get this sometimes? Someone who, though not a big name, was fairly prominent in his time but after that time is essentially forgotten?

Tim Wallach - finished with some MVP votes on several occasions and once the likes of Galaragga, Dawson, Carter and Raines were shipped elswhere was the centerpiece on the Expos teams of the late 80's, early 90's.

Steve Sax - had some great seasons, finished with MVP votes, but was overshadowed as a 2B in the era of Ryne Sandberg.

Brook Jacoby - a had some great seasons as a 3B stuck on some awful Indians teams.

Yeah I know what you're saying. In the O's History subforum there's a thread about favorite non Superstar Orioles and I brought up Geronimo Berroa because I loved his name as a kid and I recall him having some nice pop to his bat. Another random name that I thought of lately was Pete Incavelia. Remember him? Guy was I think once a heralded college baseball prospect who struck out a lot but had some power. Then there's guys like Jeff Manto who I remember from the 2130 game having a home run. And of course I think of random now retired non Orioles too. Chad Ogea who apparently Manny Ramirez thought was the same as O.J Simpson when the team was watching the famous chase in the clubhouse. Uhhh Sandy Alomar Jr who I always will kinda hate for breaking up Mussina's near perfect game. Other names will come to mind eventually. It would be nice if I had my old baseball card collection here with me on the campus. And I remember Karkvoice as well. Kind of a weird looking dude I recall. Didn't they call him "Officer"

What?? I never heard that before. Too funny.

I'll submit Felix Jose. He played for the A's when Canseco did. He was in the lineup and Canseco was not. After reading the boxscore, I thought Canseco dropped his last name and was going by his first name.

I've read about it on Manny being Manny articles. Story goes that Manny enters the clubhouse and hears his mates talking about OJ being chased and he says "Why are they chasing Chad." Oh until we got him last year I also had memories of Paul Shuey with the Indians too. I used to call him shoeface. I know I was 10 :P and I hated those Indians teams a lot.

The all mighty Robert Machado was on that 97 White Sox team.

Robert Machado! I remember him because he was the only Prince William Cannon from the Cannons game my uncle took to me in 94 that made the majors I believe. Crazy. Didn't he play for us for a couple games?

He sure did. 2003 and 2004. He was a defensive specialist with no bat to speak of. I believe he originally came up to replace Gil, who was supposed to be a defensive specialist but really wasn't (too many passed balls).

Yeah one of the many backup catchers we've had over the years. I am not sure if this is a good example but how about Lenny Webster? Or would that be too much like Inky like B-Terp said? I remember Webster because he was as I recall Scott Erickson's personal catcher and I remember him hitting a grand slam I think in the summer of 98.

And in the ALCS in 97 where he was either called for Catcher's interference or had a passed ball when the batter was bunting and actually fouled the ball off, allowing a run to score of Mussina.

I don't remember that from 97. Only thing I remember from 1997 was the heartbreak and not knowing that it would be the last time to that point the O's would be in the playoffs again.
