Kevin Brown is spot on, it is very reminiscent of that play last year when Trey Mancini was ruled to have "taken a turn" towards 2nd on the basis of a slight body turn and maybe an inch or two of leftward motion, so he was called out when they tagged him walking back to first.

Would have to assume that’s the case. It just makes no sense. He gets up standing on the base and can obviously see that the ball was caught. He’s a professional ball player. There’s no way his intent was to go to third and not back to first. It’s a ridiculous call made even more ridiculous by confirming the call on replay.

On both of these plays, the other team has to see it to appeal it.  I think umpires unconsciously get excited about a prospective call out and something about their demeanor alerts the other team.
