A soon to be 33 Stroman with his well below league average K% returning to the AL East...I'm not so sure.

Didn’t seem to be a problem last year.  A complete game 1 hit shutout against the Rays.  6 IP 3 H 1 R against the Red Sox.  His only 2 against AL East.

Then prepare to be disappointed.  The Orioles will not acquire a better pitcher than these three this offseason.

I never said I would be disappointed if they signed either of them.

My point is that there isn’t much that separates them, so no need to give up a pick or a 4+ year contract.

I find it funny people clamoring for Stroman as a legit SP when he threw 18 more innings than Tyler wells last year @ 35x  the cost while registering a higher BB/9 & lower K/9 rates. Singing Stroman would be a colossal mistake regardless of contract.  He’s not a difference maker.

E Rod & Gray are difference makers.  Sign me up for either lol.

It’s all moot because there is a 0% chance we sign either and I’ll frankly be sunrises if we engage in talks with either.

Stroman is 5’7”.

Yeah, I saw that when I was checking his stats and heights on both pitchers.   Stroman has been pretty durable although he’s missed a chunk of starts each of the last two years.  Sounds like a lat strain was the main problem last year but he had a great first half.  Gray has had his share of physical issues too.

These three seem like the shopping aisle Mike Elias is probably shopping down.  Pick one and feel free to post your reasoning.

I went with Gray ….but  read somewhere that he’s looking for a shorter term as he’s not sure how long he wants to pitch. Perhaps he’d do a 2-3 with a mutual or player option.

If it were me I’d still go with as long as contract as I could get and front load the contract as much as possible.  There’s nothing that would stop Sonny Gray from retiring after year 2 of a 4 year contract BUT what do I know.

Well ….if you thought he might retire after 2 it seemed like they could stash his pay for 3 & 4 away in case he decides to pitch. If you paid him 30 in each of the first 2 years he’d have more incentive to walk away after 2.

I’m looking at Stroman and wondering why @Sports Guystill loves him. Why would you pay that much for 135ish innings?

So your spending 20+ per year to get 135+/- from Stroman, 150 +/- for Rodriguez, or somewhere between 135 & 180 for Gray.  I threw out Rodriquez’s injury season, the low of three for Gray, and went with Stroman’s last 2. Because they were nearly identical.BTW, Gray’s FIP was 2.83 almost a full run lower than the other 2. I’d expect us to be sound defensively.

If I’m thinking about retirement but not 100% sure about when, then give the 4/90 contract with a 30-30-15-15 payout.   The total contact is still 4/90.  The signing team knows he could retire after year two.  But, I’m still guaranteed the last two years (2/30) if I have a career ending injury at any point.

Or there could be an opt out, player, team, or mutual option after year 2.

I wouldn’t sign a 2/60 contract unless I was 100% sure I was retiring at the end of the two years.

That’s why I’d prefer the player options and the salary divided by 4

If you use the last 3 years, Stroman has pitched more innings than Gray.   Gray had his first 30 start season in three years.  Stroman has been 33/25/25.

So you throw our ERods injury season but don’t account for an injury for Stroman?  What sense does that make?

Admittingly Stroman has been held back the last few years by injuries but he has been pretty durable for most of his career, much more so than ERod.

And saying I love Stroman is just a dumb thing to say. The poll is asking of the 3, who would you sign. Ultimately, I’m not sure I sign any of these guys even though I do think Gray is a good target and would be ok with Stroman on a 2 year deal.

I have become more and more intrigued about Cease mainly because if the Os can fix him, i think he can be an actual difference maker in the playoffs. I don’t think any of these guys would be.
