Cuban 18-year old outfielder Yandro Hernandez, who defected this week, could be an interesting target, but likely needs to be cleared as free agent by commissioner’s office first.

I have a hard time getting too excited over these signings. It's not because I'm not happy about them. I am. I'm thrilled that they seem to be building an legit international pipeline.

But it'll be 2 years before we start to hear anything about these guys, at least. Two years ago we signed Tavera. I still know next to nothing about him. 

I'm not complaining, but Tony's reports on players in year 2-3 after they're signed are usually the first time I get a sense of who might be good.

The BP podcast accompanying their Top 101 release had a fun observation in this spirit regarding their top 3 of Holliday-Langford-Caminero.

As recently as 2021, they were a prep with a 2nd-3rd round grade, the 3rd string catcher on the Florida Gators, and traded for Tobias Myers.

Only 4 of 19 (21%)pitchers.  I know you gotta go for the athletes but I thought for sure we’d see more pitchers signed.  
 

Last year 9 of 27 (33%)were pitchers.  When I have time I’m going to look at the attrition rate of these guys.  I’m curious the percentage that make it to affiliate ball.

They tend to sign pitchers later in the year.  The Astros model and what many teams do now is look for pitchers who didn’t get signed as 16-17-18 and look for late bloomers.  Christian Javier, Luis García, and Framber Valdez, I believe, were between 19-20 when signed.

May be a down year for pitchers.  I heard that only 2 of the top 50 signed were pitchers and the highest was 25.

We'll be able to stalk the Dodgers on any emerging properties that want their bonus this summer rather than next winter.

The Astros success with Framber, C. Javier, Urquidy and Garcia for me was really the driver that kept them going when Cole and some of the other first wave guys left.     I feel sure Latin America has a lot of 17-19 year old pitchers whose talents weren't readily apparent when they were 13-15 to get pipelined to somebody.
