O's AAA outfielders

wildcard

Recommended Posts

Lots of possibilities:

Should be in the majors but may  begin the season at AAA:

(2) Cowser,  Kjerstad

If they make it through waivers:

(4) McKenna,  Hilliard

Should be traded but may begin the season at AAA:

(5) Stowers

AAAA guys:

(7) Burdock, Daniel Johnson;

Adding left field to try to make the majors:

(8) Norby

Returning:

(9) Haskin

Earned a promotion from AA:

(1o) Cook

Starts at AA but should be promotion during the season:

(12) Beavers, Rhodes

Organization player:

(13) Fontana

Who stays and who goes?

Where did you come up with Dalton Guthrie?   He looks like a signed a minor league deal with the Red Sox.

Impossible to predict but I’ll go:

LF Burdick

CF Cowser

RF Stowers

DH Haskin

bench - Johnson

Kjerstad makes Orioles

What about Mayo playing some RF?

He’ll probably play some but it won’t be a lot from the sound of it.  Mostly 3B and some 1B.  Of course that could change depending on what happens at the major league level.

Fangraphs lists him on the Red Sox on roster resource.

MLB.com says the same. He is also not listed on our NRI list.

Weird that he is on the Fangraphs Orioles page, but that looks like an error.

You could probably throw Vavra in there, too.   And Fabian is another guy who could be promoted sometime during the year, if he cuts down on the whiffs.

I’m not going to predict who makes it, but it does look to me like several guys will need to be traded or released at the end of spring training.

As of right now…

Hilliard is the O’s 4th OF. McKenna gets DFAd and claimed. Cowser and Kjerstad both start the year in AAA. But of course there could be trades.

AAA

CF - Burdick

RF - Cowser

LF - Stowers

1B/DH/RF - Kjerstad

5th OF Haskin

6th OF Johnson

AA - Cook, Rhodes, Beavers, Fabian, Fontana

Not if Mateo shows he can play CF.  In that case I am not sure Hilliard breaks with the team.

I give Hilliard the tie break over McKenna because I think we’re fine with Hilliard as a starter more than we are McKenna. McKenna is just a defensive replacement that can start against a tough lefty to give Mullins a break. Hilliard is a guy who wouldn’t kill the team batting 8th/9th if Mullins has to miss some time. Also, I could see him getting the occasional start in LF or RF to give Santa and Hays a day off.

Hilliard has more upside with the bat. I like McKenna. I hope he clears waivers. I’m sure Elias is going to try and time his DFA right when the market is the most flooded. Probably right before OD or shortly after it.

Mateo can’t hit.

Neither could McKenna and it’s questionable if Hilliard can hit also plus being LH he’s not a great complement to Cedric.  Mateo could be strictly SS/CF and Kjerstad, Cowser, or Hilliard could be the backup LF/RF which would seem to favor Hilliard due to defense and not wanting young players in such an infrequent role.

Current projected bench assuming with Holliday at 2B.

McCann, Urias, Mateo, Hilliard

Without Holliday on the team, Urias starts and Matón has a real good shot at the last spot.
