The Kjerstad/Cowser spring competition

I think there is room for both to make the team if they earn it.

The biggest thing blocking their PT is if the team wants both Mounty/O'Hearn to start everyday vs RHers.

Only way it works is if they start Urias/Gunnar/Westburg and keep Mateo as utility.

Like you said with O’Hearn here plus add in Adley being a DH at times hard for me to see it.

It’s possible that neither Kjerstad nor Cowser will earn an OD roster spot, or that both will.   But I think the greatest likelihood is that one will and one won’t.

As of 2/28, it’s advantage Cowser, who’s looked great this spring, hitting two homers and batting .500/.700/1.500 in 10 PA.  Today’s homer traveled 428 feet.

Kjerstad meanwhile is 1 for 11, with his one hit being a single, for an .091/.091/.091 line.

Still miles to go, and I expect both to get 50+ PA this spring.   But I thought it would be good to have a thread devoted to that competition.

I think I’ll wait until these guys are consistently facing good ML pitchers.   Who are Cowsers two homers off of?

Nobody of note.  But nobody said it was time to draw any big conclusions.

Didn't you know there was already a plan in place, and management has decided who they "want" to make the team. Cowser is not part of the major league roster in that plan.

The alignment you mention is the one I expect to see unless Holliday or Mayo makes the team. If one of them does make the team, and everyone's healthy, I'm guessing Urias or O'Hearn will be traded.

No, I didn’t know.  Mike Elias didn’t send me the memo.

I thought for a second this was a setup because Pablo Lopez was going to be who he got the HR off of, but it was the reliever that followed him.    Cowser did Single off Pablo, and it was Ramon Urias who got Pablo for the tater.

Ramon also got a hit off Jhoan Duran - that's a nice afternoon.

Westburg also got an RBI single off a 94 mph (or was it 96) splitter.    I hope Cowser keeps it up but I already know he can mash AAA pitching.

I’m not saying to get rid of depth. I’m saying to have different depth.

Yup. Like having Kjerstad take O’Hearn’s spot and free up that $3.5 million for one of Lorenzen/Clevinger. Also, as a current “payroll challenged” team, do we really have the luxury of an $8.3 million bench when we need a SP?

With Hilliard going, I think Cowser has the inside track on making it because of his defense.

All you had to do was pay attention to the first four lineups:

LOL.  Well, the good thing is that no matter who makes it you’ll panic at first chance and claim they should be sent down like you did with Henderson for the first two months last year.   I need the laughs so keep posting.

This should probably be Kjerstad/Cowser/Stowers as Stowers made the team last spring and is technically outplaying Kjerstad.

But... yeah, odds aren't great for Kyle.

That’s true but very technical.  Stowers is 1 for 10 with 4 strikeouts.

I want the team to give both Cowser and Kjerstad at bats against established Big League left handed pitchers. Then we can get a sample size to make some educated decisions. Right now Cowser is outperforming Kjerstad but I also don't know if Kjerstad is getting as much playing time because all I have to go on are box scores without seeing the games.
