Different sport but here we go!

In the game on Jan. 26 against the LA Clippers, there was increased betting interest on the under for Porter props, which for the night were set at 5.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists. There was also an over/under for Porter's made 3-pointers, which was 0.5.

That night, Porter played just four minutes before leaving the game due to what the Raptors said was a re-aggravation of an eye injury he'd suffered four days earlier in a game against the Memphis Grizzlies. He did not score in the game against the Clippers, had three rebounds and one assist, and did not attempt a 3, meaning the under hit on all of the props.

The next day, as part of a daily report to users on betting results, DraftKings Sportsbook reported that the under on Porter's 3-pointers was the biggest money winner for bettors of any NBA player props from games that evening.

This seems pretty open and shut for Ippei and pretty clean for Ohtani.

District court complaint: https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/24542204-usa-v-mizuhara-complaint

Summary of Probably Cause

5. In an interview with law enforcement, Victim A stated that he did not authorize these transfers from the x5848 Account.

6. The transfers from the x5848 Account were made from devices and IP addresses associated with IPPEI MIZUHARA, an individual who was, until recently, employed as Victim A’s translator and de facto manager. Text messages on MIZUHARA’s mobile phone show that in September 2021 MIZUHARA began gambling with BOOKMAKER 1’s illegal sports book, and began losing substantial sums of money in late 2021. Bank A records show that during the same time period, the contact information on the x5848 Account was changed to link the x5848 Account to MIZUHARA’s phone number, and to an anonymous email account which is connected to MIZUHARA based on data found on MIZUHARA’s mobile phone.

7. Recorded phone calls produced by Bank A related to the x5848 Account show MIZUHARA falsely identifying himself as Victim A, and attempting to trick and deceive Bank A employees into authorizing wire transfers from the x5848 Account to associates of BOOKMAKER 1.

8. Bank A records show that MIZUHARA accessed the x5848 Account pretending to be Victim A and transferred funds to associates of BOOKMAKER 1. In particular, on June 20, 2023, MIZUHARA accessed the x5848 Account from the Central District of California pretending to be Victim A and wire transferred $500,000 to an associate of BOOKMAKER 1. p. 5 4

9. Finally, on March 20, 2024, MIZUHARA sent BOOKMAKER 1 an encrypted text message admitting that he (MIZUHARA) had stolen funds from Victim A.

Some text messages between Ippei and the bookie have been released: https://www.espn.com/mlb/story/_/id/39922624/shohei-ohtani-ippei-mizuhara-gambling-debts-line

This is the perfect example of why this explosion of sports betting in recent years is dangerous and destroys lives.  Crazy ironic that ESPN runs this article with a link to their betting page at the top.

Betting is dumb, the house always wins.

Although this article mainly focuses on basketball, it shows how scary the explosion of sports betting has become: many athletes are reporting abuse and even death threats from people involved in sports betting.

    • I'm a big fan.  It doesn't mean I have sources in the clubhouse. Do we have any idea who her sources are?  Does she have any kind of track record of having reliable sources?
    • I don't know who this woman is and I don't do Twitter. And this is what I touched on in the other thread: I don't know what the best path forward is b/c I don't know exactly what the problem is. I don't think Hyde needs to go, but if this is true- and I have no idea if it is or not- he should be gone. The talk of veteran leaders brings questions.  What was insufficient of the leadership of Satandaner, Mullins, Burnes, and Kimbrel?
    • Sig for me is notably rigorous trying to combat this.    I feel pretty sure he had a say in crafting his very geeky title, a reflection of his personal brand. We'll see how it goes here if it becomes recommending Adam Frazier and Kyle Gibson as correct for the roster once again.
    • Again, I'm not sure what the point of contention is. They won 91 games and lost in the Wildcard round.  That puts them smack in the middle of what I forecast as their most likely outcome, though I did hope for more playoff success.  I'm not sure how that is proof I misevaluated anything. Further, again, lecturing me about the importance of depth, when I'm one of the biggest hoarders on this board, and you're one of the biggest opposite of that, is ironic to say the least.
    • Aaron Judge whined about it so I’m a fan.  The older I get, the more I think people just exist to look for confirmation biases. In all avenues of life. Paul Simon wrote “a man hears what he wants to hear and disregards the rest.” I’m sure if we beat the Royals and advanced and Walltimore robbed three or four homers from the Royals, we’d be extolling its virtues and how great it is.    But that didn’t happen. If anything, there were a couple instances where, if anything, it worked against us.    So here we are.
    • I mean I wouldn’t be concerned about her opinions on which FA to sign or which players are best. But, she’s definitely a big fan and is just passing off info given to her. If it didn’t track into some other things that make sense, I wouldn’t pay it much mind. Of course, someone with an agenda could’ve just told her those things to spread rumors. Maybe Rick Dempsey haha.
    • Do you think any team is too stupid to account for home park dimensions when evaluating pitchers?
